This tree received its name from the colour of its leaves in the autumn, the colour of its twigs, the pinkish colour of its inner bark. It is one of the most valuable species in the forest because of the high value of its wood. This tree prefers warmer southern regions and valleys, but can be found throughout the North East USA. This tree has a commanding appearance, with heavy limbs. Over the centuries this tree has become a universal symbol for strength and steadfastness. The furrows of the bark have a reddish tinge. The ridges are flat. It is said that the bark resembles ski trails. On mature specimens the reddish colour disappears. Leaves remain attached to the tree during the winter.
