DEEP POND / Preserved Treasure /
There is a unique 30+ acre pond in Wading River Long Island.
A Kettle Hole Pond created by the last glacier. What makes it unique is its unspoiled state. Unusual for suburbia LI with its sprawling development. It is in the middle of a 400 acre property owned by Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts. They have a cooperative agreement with New York State DEC to permit limited fishing for large Yellow Perch, Chain Pickerel and mature trout stocked in the fall.
Kettle Holes are formed by blocks of ice, ( sometime huge ) falling off a retreating Glacier. With the right conditions these blocks become partly buried in melting sediments. After the ice block melts it leaves behind, usually round depressions or holes. These holes can be dry, bogs, ponds or lakes depending on the eventual height of the water table.
Here are some pictures, starting with an old brick entrance.
The property was bought by the Boy Scouts in 1921 and was called Camp Wauwepex. It was used as a summer camp until closing in 1979. Renamed Schiff Scout Reservation, It still gets much use from local Boy Scout Troops and families, along with district and council events being held there.
