방탄소년단 (防彈少年團, 영어: Bangtan Boys, 일본어: 防弾少年団, 중국어: 防弹少年团, BTS)은 대한민국의 7인조 보이 그룹으로 빅히트엔터테인먼트 소속이며 '방탄소년단'이라는 이름의 '방탄'은 총알을 막아낸다는 뜻으로 10대에서부터 20대들이 사회적 편견과 억압을 받는 것을 막아내고 당당히 자신들의 음악과 가치를 지켜내겠다는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 

방탄소년단을 지칭하는 ‘BTS’는 bulletproof boys라는 뜻이다. 2016년 7월 빅히트에서는 방탄소년단과 팬클럽 아미(ARMY)의 변경된 브랜드 아이덴티티(BI)를 모션 그래픽 영상을 깜짝 공개하면서 과거와 미래를 아우르는 개념으로 확장 시킨 ‘BTS’에 대한 정의를 내렸고 로고를 바꾼 이후 Beyond The Scene이라는 뜻도 같이 추가했는데, 현재는 주로 이 뜻으로 많이 쓰이고 있다. 이는 ‘10대들의 억압과 편견을 막는다’는 뜻을 유지하면서 ‘현실에 안주하지 않고 꿈을 향해 끊임없이 달려가는 청춘’이라는 의미를 더했고, 그룹의 이름을 ‘BTS’로 바꿔 부르면서 해외에서는 인지도를 높이는 계기가 됐다. 팬덤은 아미(ARMY)이며, 방탄복과 군대처럼 방탄소년단도 팬클럽과 항상 함께라는 의미를 가지고 있다.   방탄소년단은 싱글 앨범 《2 COOL 4 SKOOL》(2013)로 데뷔했다. 멜론 뮤직 어워드, 서울가요대상과 골든 디스크, 가온 차트 K-POP 어워드에서 신인상을 수상하였다. 데뷔한 후, 2년여동안 ‘학교 3부작’ 앨범을 연이어 발매하며 활발한 활동을 이어나간 그들은 첫 번째 정규 앨범 《DARK&WILD》(2014)를 발매하였다. 큰 주목을 받기 시작한 세 번째 미니 앨범 《화양연화 pt.1》(2015)에 이어 네 번째 미니 앨범 《화양연화 pt.2》(2015)으로 미국 빌보드 메인 앨범 차트인 빌보드 200에 첫 진입하였고, 이듬해 이 시리즈를 총망라하는 스페셜 앨범 《화양연화 Young Forever》(2016)를 발매하며 많은 인기를 끌었다. ‘화양연화’ 시리즈는 2017년 현재까지 105만 장에 달하는 판매량을 달성하였다. 방탄소년단은 ‘화양연화’ 시리즈의 성공으로 단숨에 대세로 떠올랐다. 그들은 2년만에 발매한 두 번째 정규 앨범 《WINGS》(2016)를 통해 K-pop 아이돌 그룹로서 해외에서 전례 없던 대기록을 세우며 톱 아이돌 반열에 등극했다. 이 앨범은 발매 전 선주문 50만 장을 기록하며 두 달간 총 75만 장의 판매고로 이 판매량은 가온차트 집계 사상 최고 판매량 기록(2016년 가온차트 연간 결산 1위)하며 그들의 성장세를 보여줬고, 빌보드 200 차트에 26위로 진입해 한국 가수 중 최고 기록을 세운 동시에 빌보드 200 3개 앨범 연속 진입 기록과 2주 연속 차트 유지, 한국 가수 최초로 영국 오피셜 앨범차트 진입(62위) 빌보드 월드 앨범 차트 18주 연속 톱10에 들었다. 

방탄소년단은 2016년 12월 열린 엠넷 아시안 뮤직 어워드 올해의 가수상, 멜론 뮤직 어워드 올해의 앨범상을 첫 수상하며 데뷔 3년 만에 국내 가요계 정상에 올랐다.   2017년 5월 빌보드 뮤직 어워드에서 K-pop 그룹 최초로 시상식에 참석해 톱소셜 아티스트 상을 수상했다. 그들의 다음 앨범으로 2017년 9월 발매한 다섯 번째 미니 앨범 《Love Yourself 承 `Her`》은 출시 이후 13일 만에 120만 장의 판매량을 기록해 이는 가온차트 집계 역사상 가장 높은 판매량이자, 단일앨범 월간 판매기준 2001년 11월 god 정규 4집 앨범(144만 장, 한국음반산업협회) 이후 16년 만에 120만장 돌파라는 엄청난 기록을 세우며 가요계 새 역사를 쓰며 큰 화제를 모았다. 이후 가온차트 누적 집계 사상 최다 판매량인 149만 장(1월 12일자)을 돌파하는 등 역대 최다판매량으로 가온차트 연간앨범차트 1위에 등극하며 명실상부 ‘음반킹’ 자리를 확고히 했다. 오는 8월 24일 발매될 Love Yourself: Answer 앨범은 현재 예약판매중으로 일주일밖에 지나지 않았지만 벌써 151만장을 기록하였다. 빌보드 200 7위에 진입해 한국 가수 최고 순위이자 아시아 최고 신기록을 세우며 기존 기록들을 갈아치웠고, 타이틀곡 "DNA"로 미국 빌보드 메인 싱글 차트인 빌보드 핫 100에서 85위로 진입하며 방탄소년단의 첫 번째 핫 100 진입의 쾌거를 이뤘다. 이후 일주일 만에 67위로 순위가 상승해 K-pop 그룹 최고 순위(원더걸스의 "Nobody" 영어버전이 기록한 76위)를 갈아치웠다. 또한 한국 가수 최초로 5개 앨범이 연속 빌보드 200 차트에 오르는 기록을 세우며, 한국 가수 최초로 4주 연속 빌보드 핫 100과 빌보드 200에 동시 오르는 기염을 토했다. 2017년 11월 K-pop 그룹 최초이자 2017년 올해 아시아 뮤지션으로서는 유일하게 아메리칸 뮤직 어워드에 '퍼포머'로 초청받은 방탄소년단은 성공적인 미국 데뷔 무대를 마쳤다. 2017년 12월 신곡 "MIC Drop" 리믹스 버전이 빌보드 핫100에서 28위에 오르며 방탄소년단의 자체 기록이자 K-pop 그룹 최고의 기록을 갈아 치웠고, 미국 아이튠즈 '톱 송 차트'에서 K-pop 그룹 최초로 1위를 차지하는 대기록을 세웠다. 

방탄소년단은 2017년 12월 열린 엠넷 아시안 뮤직 어워드 올해의 가수상, 멜론 뮤직 어워드 올해의 베스트송상, 글로벌 아티스트상에 이어 2018년 1월 골든디스크 시상식 음반부문 대상과 서울가요대상에서 첫 대상을 수상하며 총 4개의 대상 트로피, 주요 시상식의 대상을 모두 석권하는 기염을 토했다. 그들의 데뷔 이후, 전세계에서 약 500만 장의 앨범을 판매하였다.   거대한 팬덤과 영향력을 가진 소셜 미디어로 유명한 방탄소년단은 2016년 3월 미국의 경제 전문지 포브스에서 발표한 ‘지난 한 달 간 트위터에서 가장 많이 리트윗된 아티스트’ 순위에서 1위를 차지했다. 

그 후, 트위터는 5월에 방탄소년단이 등장한 최초의 K-pop 트위터 이모티콘을 출시했다. 2016년 10월 빌보드 소셜 50에서 방탄소년단은 1위를 차지하며 이 차트에서 정상에 오른 첫 번째 K-pop 그룹이 되었다. 현재까지 그들은 소셜 50 차트에서 총 64주 1위를 차지하고 있다. 이러한 활약으로 2017년 2월 포브스코리아가 발표한 ‘2017 파워 셀레브리티’ 5위에 선정 되었다. 미국 유명 주간지 피플지는 국내를 넘어 전 세계 음악 팬들의 마음을 훔친 방탄소년단에 대해 ‘세계에서 가장 인기 있는 보이그룹’라고 소개했으며, 미국 시사주간지 타임지는 한국인으로 유일하게 ‘인터넷에서 가장 영향력 있는 25인’에 2017년 11월 20일 기네스 세계 기록에서 발표에 따르면 방탄소년단은 ‘트위터 최다 활동 남성그룹 부문’ 기네스 세계기록 2018년판에 등재됐다. 미국 유력 신문 뉴욕 타임스는 ‘미국인들이 가장 사랑하는 아티스트’에 44위로 아시아 가수 중 유일하게 선정했다. 

그 해 12월, 그들은 미국의 경제 전문지 블룸버그 통신에 따르면 트위터 좋아요, 리트윗 수가 저스틴 비버 2200만 회, 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령 2억 1300만 회를 뛰어 넘는 5억 200만 회를 기록해 세계 1위를 차지했다. 방탄소년단은 데뷔 4년 만에 전 세계에 자신들의 이름을 알리새며 대한민국 최고의 아티스트로 자리잡았다.

"Bangtan Boys, Japanese: 防弾少年団, Chinese: 防弹少年团, BTS" is a group of seven boys from South Korea and is a member of 'Bangtan Entertainment' BTS, which stands for Bangtan, means Bulletproof Boys. In July 2016, Big Hit, the company used the modified brand identity of Bangtanny and the fan club Ami. While maintaining the meaning of "blocking teenage oppression and prejudice," it added the term "adulting youth who constantly run toward dreams rather than complacent," and the name of the group has been changed to "BTSS" in foreign countries. Army means that bulletproof clothes and troops are always with the Bangtan Band.   Bangtan made its debut with a single album "2 COOL 4 SKOOL (2013)." Melon Music Awards, SeoulShe won the Rookie of the Year award at the K-POP Awards, the Grand Prize and the Golden Disc and the Gaon Chart. After more than two years since their debut, they have released their first full-length album, DARK&WILD, (2014). The popular fourth mini album, "Pt.1," followed by "Flower Special," "2015," was released on the Billboard main album chart in the U.S. The "Hwayang Yeonhwa" series has sold over 1.05 million copies so far in 2017. The Bangtan emerged as the mainstream in a flash with the success of the 'Hwangyanghwa' series. They became the top idol group in two years as K-pop idol groups, setting an unprecedented milestone overseas through their second full-length album "WINGS" (2016). The album recorded 500,000 preorders before its release, with a total of 750,000 sold in the past two months, making it the first-ever record in sales in Korea (66, the highest in the history of the Gaon Chart). Bangtan has won the domestic music charts for the first time in three years since its debut, winning the Mnet Asian Music Awards of the Year award for singers and melon Music Awards for the first time.   At the Billboard Music Awards in May 2017, K-pop group attended the awards ceremony for the first time and won the Best Social Artist Award. With their next album released in September 2017, their fifth mini album "Love Yourself" has sold 1.2 million copies in 13 days since its release. Since then, it has surpassed 1.49 million sales (January 12), the highest in the history of Gaon Chart, and has been ranked No. 1 in the annual album chart. The Love Yourself: Answer album, which will be released on August 24, is currently only a week away from preorders, but has already sold 1.51 million copies. He broke existing records by ranking at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and setting a new Asian record. In just a week since then, it has risen to 67th, breaking the K-pop group's highest ranking (the 76th place recorded by Wonder Girls' English version). He also set a record of five consecutive Billboard 200 chart albums for the first time in a row, making it the first time for a Korean singer to climb the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 at the same time for four consecutive weeks. Bangtan, the first K-pop group in November 2017 and the only Asian musician to be invited to the American Music Awards this year, completed their successful U.S. debut. In December 2017, the new song "MIC Drop" remix was ranked 28th on the Billboard Hot100, breaking the K-pop group's own record and the first K-pop group to break the record. Bangtan is the winner of the Golden Disk Awards in January 2018 and Seoul, following the Mnet Asian Music Awards of the Year award, Melon Music Awards of the Year award and the Global Artist Award.By winning the first prize on the list, he displayed his magic skills by winning a total of four trophies and all of the winners of the major awards. Since their debut, they have sold about 5 million albums worldwide.   The Bangtan, famous for its huge social media, topped Twitter's list of the most retwitted artists in the past month, announced by Forbes in March 2016. Then, Twitter released the first K-pop Twitter emoticon to feature the Bangtan band in May. In October 2016, the Bangtan Group topped the Billboard social 50 list, becoming the first K-pop group to reach the top of the chart. So far, they have topped the social 50 chart for a total of 64 weeks. With this performance, he was ranked fifth in the 2017 Power Celibacy released by Forbes Korea in February 2017. The U.S. magazine People's Magazine introduced the world's most popular boy band in the men's 20th edition of the 2016 edition of "The World's Most Influenced by the Internet" The New York Times was the only Asian artist to have ever been selected as the 44th most loved by Americans. In December of that year, according to Bloomberg, an American economic magazine, the number of tweets topped 22 million Justin Bieber and 213 million U.S. President Donald Trump. After four years since its debut, Bangtan has become one of the best artists in Korea.
