MIKE TYSON´S PUNCH OUT: A knockout to boredom!!!

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

One of the best games released for the 8-bit Nintendo console, is undoubtedly "Mike Tyson's Punch Out". A title that at the time, seemed to be a game of sports, however, once the player connected the cartridge and began to get into the action, he would realize that it was not a traditional game of boxing, but an avalanche of action with great doses of fun, memorable funny characters, catchy melodies and a trepidante difficulty.

Origins:

Before its arrival at the NES, Punch Out would take its first steps in the "Arcade" rooms, with two machines that by then became very popular. Precisely the first would receive the same name: "Punch Out", and its sequel "Super Punch Out". From there, several of the opponents that we would see in the NES game and then, in the title released for SNES, which would bear the same name as the second recreational machine, would come off. Its launch for the home format dates back to 1987. It was designed by the Japanese Genyo Takeda and Makoto Wada. His music, remembered with emotion by all Retro Gamers, was composed by Yukio Kaneoka, Akito Nakatsuka and Kenji Yamamoto.

The Game

In Punch Out, our character is a boxer called "Little Mac", which is going up in three different circuits: Minor, Major and World. Each of these has several challengers. When we beat them, we climb positions until we become the number one challenger and face the fight for the "Title", against the Champion of that category. In the end, and after obtaining the three "World Titles", we will face the "Kid Dynamite" Mike Tyson, who stands out for his speed and strength, being a real hard nut to crack.

His graphics, very advanced for the time, allowed us to enjoy very well designed and large characters; with animations very fluid and with very funny reactions, every time they triumphed or lost before the protagonist of the game. Special mention deserves the memorable encounters with the Japanese Piston Honda, Bald Bull and his Bull Charge, the funny King Hippo and his shorts that fell to hit him in the mouth, or the cocky and powerful Super Macho Man. Other aspects such as music and gameplay , stand out as positive elements that definitely made it one of the favorites of the game catalog for the NES.

As curious facts we can mention that "Mario" makes an appearance in this game under the role of "referee" of the fight. There is also an animation that takes place between "circuit and circuit", in which Little Mac appears running in a training session and accompanied by his coach "Doc Louis", in a scene very similar to the views in the films of "Rocky" . Maybe this was a nod or a small tribute to this saga, because at that time was very popular with the general public.

An unexpected reissue: Tyson is knocked out!

As a curious fact, the game had a revision both in its title, as in the sprite of the final contender. In the year 1990 the game was reedited calling it only: "Punch Out", thus eliminating the figure and name of Myke Tyson from the cartridge and replacing it with a fictitious champion called "Mr. Dream". This generated a lot of confusion among the fans, but when trying out this new version, the gamers of the time proved that except for the change of name and the aforementioned character, the game was still practically the same.

There are several speculations about why Tyson was eliminated from the game. Some assure that it was due to the "legal problems" and conduct, in which the athlete was implicated, being accused even of rape. Others argue that the real reason for the change was because this boxer had declined in popularity, in addition to having lost the world boxing title. Added to these reasons, by eliminating it from Punch Out, Nintendo would not have to pay him more for the rights to use his name as a public figure, saving a large sum of money; Not to mention that the game was already sold only, without the need for publicity.

In summary, Punch Out is an excellent title. Particularly one of my favorites! They were hours and hours in front of the television trying to learn all the movements and weak points of each opponent. I can proudly say that in more than one opportunity I managed to beat Mike ... And believe me ... it's not easy! If you still do not know him, then look for it and play it; I guarantee you a lot of fun with him. And if you have already played it and you were frustrated for not having defeated any of its characters, then this is the time to have a rematch and fight for the greatest title of all: Be the "World Boxing Champion in Video Games".

I share a small video review that I prepared about this game! Enjoy it
