Cuenca, that great unknown of Spain. It is a small city in the center of Spain with a lot of history. It is not a tourist destination for people who visit Spain from other countries but, although it may not seem like it, it is for lovers of rural tourism and quiet places.
Cuenca, esa gran desconocida de España. Es una pequeña ciudad del centro de España con muchísima historia. No es un destino turístico para la gente que visita España desde otros países pero, aunque no lo parezca, sí lo es para los amantes del turismo rural y de lugares tranquilos.
Living in Madrid, for me, it is very easy to visit Cuenca any weekend as it is very well connected, so a while ago we decided to go spend the day there. We did not choose a good day precisely, it was raining a lot and there was a lot of wind so our visit was reduced to spend the morning, eat and return to Madrid. Still, it gave us time to see two of the most beautiful places in Cuenca, being one of them, the most characteristic of there.
Viviendo en Madrid, para mí, es muy sencillo visitar Cuenca cualquier fin de semana ya que está muy bien comunicada, así que hace un tiempo decidimos ir a pasar el día allí. No elegimos buen día precisamente, estaba lloviendo muchísimo y había muchísimo viento así que nuestra visita se redujo a pasar la mañana, comer y volver a Madrid. Aún así, nos dio tiempo a ver tres de los lugares más bonitos de Cuenca, siendo uno de ellos, el más característico de allí.
Hanging houses - Casas colgadas
They are the monument that everyone knows about Cuenca even they have not been there. They were built in the fifteenth century. They are three houses that in their origins were manor houses and have been used like city council or like museums. To this day, two of them (Casas del Rey) have the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art and the third (Casa de la Sirena) has an inn.
Son el monumento que todo el mundo conoce de Cuenca aunque no haya estado. Se construyeron en el siglo XV. Son tres casas que en sus orígenes eran casas señoriales y han sido usadas como ayuntamiento o como museos. A día de hoy, dos de ellas (Casas del Rey) tienen el museo de Arte Abstracto Español y la tercera (Casa de la Sirena) tiene una posada.
Bridge of San Pablo - Puente de San Pablo
It is a bridge of iron and wood that originally was of stone, but it collapsed with the passage of the time. It is above the "hoz del Huécar" and is the ideal place to observe hanging houses.
Es un puente de hierro y madera que originalmente era de piedra, pero se derrumbó con el paso del tiempo. Está encima de la "hoz del Huécar" y es el lugar ideal para observar las casas colgadas.
Convent of San Pablo and National Hostel - Convento de San Pablo y Parador Nacional
It was the place where we ate, it is a beautiful place, with a lot of charm, and with the bad weather that it did on the street, it gave a feeling of hospitality. It is in front of the houses hung, on the other side of the "hoz of the Huécar". Its structure is Gothic, from the sixteenth century. Since 1993 it functions as a national hostel and as an important fact, it is better to reserve to go to eat to not find us without a table. I booked on the advice of a friend. Its interior courtyard is very pretty, it was what we liked most after the fabulous meal.
Fue el lugar donde comimos, es un lugar precioso, con mucho encanto, y encima con el mal tiempo que hacía en la calle, daba sensación de hospitalidad. Se encuentra en frente de las casas colgadas, al otro lado de la hoz del Huécar. Su estructura es gótica, del siglo XVI. Desde 1993 funciona como parador nacional y como dato importante, es mejor reservar para ir a comer para no encontrarnos sin mesa. Yo reservé siguiendo el consejo de un amigo y acerté. Su patio interior es muy bonito, fue lo que más nos gustó después de la fabulosa comida.
If you live in Spain, you must visit Cuenca, if you live outside and visit Spain for a long time, I would go one day.
Si vives en España, Cuenca es de visita obligatoria, si vives fuera y visitas España para mucho tiempo, yo iría un día.
