Is Patreon all it's made out to be?steemCreated with Sketch.

Several people have come out to criticize Patreon lately, and I have been known to be critical myself, so I wanted to readdress it here with some thoughts.

What people don't like about Patreon

  1. Often times people are just swapping a dollar between friends, with Patreon taking a cut.
  2. In order to make any money on Patreon, you need to send THEM the leads - very few people are delivered by the platform itself.
  3. The cut Patreon takes does add up.
  4. It's yet another channel to provide content for and monitor for questions and comments.
  5. Most people who use it don't make much money at all.

What DO people like about Patreon

  1. It's a way to support content creators.
  2. It's easy to set up and use.
  3. The tools are good for what is needed.
  4. You are not getting paid to send people away (versus advertising) and it's less annoying.
  5. You can get physical addresses to send stickers, t-shirts, etc.
  6. It's like crowdfunding but without a deadline.

For people who are at Steemit looking for a source of income but are making like $0.3 per post, check it out as an alternative.

As you can see, while I made precisely $0 as a content creator, I still support a bunch of creators, and all I get is a warm fuzzy feeling and either early or extra content from some of them. What do you think?
