3D Printing Robots Using 3D Printing Robots

It's no exaggeration when I say I have been wanting to 3d print a Star Wars droid for years.

First I upgraded my Printrbot build area to print BB8.

Then when BB8 seemed to be everywhere in the forums and 3d printing groups I went back to R2 D2.

I found I didn't quite have enough build area still, so I bought an Australian 3d printer. What a terrible decision that was.

11 months later I still didn't have it working well enough so I looked to the Tevo Black Widow. That has extruder issues still. Switched to Creality CR-10 .... and got distracted.

In the meantime I got into the Star Wars Rebels TV show and started planning 3D CAD designs around the hero of the show, Chopper the Astromech.

But I switched from Tinkercad to Onshape, and again got distracted.

So I am back to printing R2.

When the Ultimaker arrived I tried a model, but discovered it was low poly.

The CR-10 is printing this latest model, the Bottle Rockets model, very very nicely. 0.3mm layers.

Maybe I will finally have a working Astromech in time for Christmas, if not the new Star Wars movie ;)

This looks awesome! What 3d printer would you recommend to someone new to the 3d printing world but looking to get into it? I'm thinking aboit buying one but theres a ton of devices out there. I've heard makr bot is alright but pretty expensive

I have a whole guide about that :)
