UNFORGETTABLE ITALY Week 28 - Obelisco Flaminio

Hello friends of the Italy community! I'm happy to join the 28th week of this great initiative called Unforgettable Italy, proposed by @girolamomarotta.

Today I want to remember through this photo the Flaminio Obelisk, located in Piazza del Popolo, a place on the outskirts of the city that I loved to know. I remember that by the time of my visit it was late afternoon, so the place offered me a spectacular view and a moment of peace and tranquility.

This monument gets its name because it is the starting point of the Via Flaminia. It is one of the 13 obelisks of Rome and one of the first to be moved from Egypt. It is located in the center of the square and has 24 meters high, is dedicated to Ramses II. Throughout history, this obelisk was placed in 3 different sites: Heliopolis, from the thirteenth century BC until 10 BC, then in the Circus Maximus until 1589 and was finally moved to Piazza del Popolo. This obelisk is guarded by 4 lion-shaped fountains.

In the surroundings of the square, I could also appreciate the churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto, two apparently twin temples that hide some differences. And the best views can be seen from the Pincio Gardens, going up the stairs on the east side.

The day I visited the square, I could see how people were very lively hanging out, I Indeed admired the beauty of that place that Rome offered me and I could only be grateful to be living that adventure. Today when I look at this and other photos of my trip, I can only wish to repeat it some other time, because Rome is undoubtedly unforgettable.
