Doleshwar Boat Terminal, Dhaka
Steemian Friends,
Today, I will review a boat terminal on the Buriganga River in Dhaka, the capital of our country. The terminal's name is Doleshwar Boat Terminal. I have shown its location below using a Steem-atlas and Google Maps.
I am in front of Doleshwar Boat Terminal.
Location and history of Doleshwar Boat Terminal: The Buriganga River flows through the middle of Dhaka's capital. The Buriganga River divides the capital, Dhaka, into two parts. On the other side of the river is Keraniganj, and on one side is a place called Kadamtali. The Bangladesh Inland Waterway and Port Authority has built several boat terminals to connect Keraniganj and Kadamtali. The Doleshwar Boat Terminal has been built so people can move around on both sides. People have been crossing the river through the Doleshwar Boat Terminal for over a hundred years.
Although the Doleshwar Boat Terminal looks small, it is important because there are numerous factories on both sides of the river. Apart from this, there is Doleshwar Hanafia Jame Mosque, Doleshwar High School and Doleshwar Madrasa, where people from both sides of the river use Doleshwar Boat Terminal for education. The cost of crossing the river through the Doleshwar Boat Terminal is very low. Crossing the river reduces the time a lot. A house has been built on the riverbank to purchase tickets. First, you must spend 3/- Taka or 0.1 Steem to enter the boat terminal. An employee sits at the desk to collect money.
Boats waiting for passengers at the boat terminal.
Passengers pay at the counter, enter the boat dock, and wait for the boat. The boats transport passengers from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. There are two large boats on both sides of the river, each transporting 30 to 40 passengers. The boat crossing costs 3/—taka or 0.1 Steem to the boatman. Numerous people travel by boat on both sides every day. The boats are powered by two diesel engines. Doleshwar Boat Terminal is being improved daily.
Boats carrying passengers on the river
Visitors use a few small boats at the boat terminal for river trips. Sometimes, some passengers cross the river on their own boats. The small boats take visitors on river trips on hourly contracts. Several large factories are on both sides of the river under British rule. For example, large companies like Dhaka Match Factory, Aristopharma, Kadamtali Industrial Zone and Bashundhara Company employ lakhs of people.
There are walkways on both sides of the river for visitors to walk. The river is used for launching boats from the capital, Dhaka, to the southern part of the country, so crossing it by small boats is risky. However, I have heard of one or two boat accidents a year. It takes four or five minutes to cross the river by boat.
Autorickshaws waiting for boat passengers
Autorickshaws and cars are parked in front of the Doleshwar Boat Terminal to take passengers across the river to different places. Some companies have boats at the river terminal to ferry people working for the company at specific times. There are various food shops in front of the terminal. The use of life safety devices while crossing boats is very rare.
Boats carrying 30/40 passengers are going to the other side of the river.
Doleshwar Boat Terminal plays a very important role in the livelihood of the people of this region. Crossing the river via the Postogola Bridge by road takes about an hour. Going to and from the office and school via the bridge daily requires much time and expense. Crossing the river via Doleshwar Boat Terminal takes five minutes and costs very little money. Some of our office colleagues travel to the office via this boat terminal to work.
