Registan (Uzbekistan)

in #photography9 years ago

Registan Square, the "heart" of ancient Samarkand is probably the most famous landmark of the city, and of all Central Asia. Perhaps it is difficult to find a place as beautiful as it is historically important. The eyes of astonished travelers invariably attract the bright blue domes of mosques, exquisite high minarets and monumental portals, richly decorated with mosaics, paintings and even gilding. Three madrasahs were built here, which were built at different times, and each of them is beautiful and remarkable in its own way. It is impossible to visit this ancient, sun-dried square, and not to feel the majestic breath of antiquity, to feel the spirit of long-ago days, in a word, literally touch history. It is not for nothing that this magnificent ensemble is considered to be the pride of not only Samarkand, but all of Uzbekistan.

Among the locals there is a terrible and beautiful legend about Registan Square. They say that from the 15th century until the arrival of Russian troops, that is, until the end of the 19th century, public executions took place here. Because in the course of this terrible act the whole area was covered in blood, it was sprinkled with sand, so that the blood was absorbed better. Actually, in support of this version, the name itself - Registan, which in Russian means "a place covered with sand" speaks. Of course, the ancient area existed not only for execution of executions. It used to be crowded when the decrees of the rulers were read.
