Interesting facts about icebergs .

The word "iceberg" in German means "ice mountain". Icebergs are formed as a result of the breakage of a large block of ice from ice shelves in the Arctic and Antarctica. Since the ice density is 920 kg / m³ and the density of sea water is about 1025 kg / m³, about 90% of the iceberg's volume is under water.
It is interesting that these ice giants cover huge distances. For example, icebergs from the Arctic swim almost to Bermuda, located at a distance of 4 000 km from their place of formation. But Antarctic icebergs can be seen in the area of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. And this is more than 5,000 km from the coast of Antarctica! Some icebergs are huge. For example, in 2000 a giant of more than 10,000 square kilometers broke away from the Ross glacier in Antarctica. The huge ice blocks floating in the ocean pose a danger to navigation. Everyone knows the tragic fate of the English passenger liner Titanic, which collided on April 14, 1912 with a huge iceberg. In this disaster, about 1500 people were killed.
Shortly after this tragedy, an International Ice Patrol was created, which monitors the movement of icebergs and warns ships of a possible danger. They are financing this service in 17 countries. Interestingly, since the beginning of the ice patrol in the North Atlantic from a collision with icebergs, not one person has died. About 100,000 icebergs are constantly floating in the coastal waters of Antarctica. According to the content of fresh water, they exceed all the rivers and lakes together. Projects are being developed for using this water for irrigation of drylands. For this purpose, it is planned to move icebergs over long distances with the help of special tugs. There are other original ways to use water from icebergs. One Canadian company produces drinking water from melted pieces of icebergs that are caught off the coast of Newfoundland.
Fans of strong drinks can appreciate the taste of ice water. In the same Canada, vodka "Iceberg" is produced, which includes water extracted from icebergs. Manufacturers are sure that this is the cleanest vodka in the world, because the average age of ice is 12 000 years. The advertising slogan of this product is interesting - "the best vodka in the world, which you have tried for the last 12 000 years".
