Devotional journey to Lankatilaka Vihara in search of ancient heritage
Good Morning Wonderful Steem Community,
How are you all? I believe you're spending wonderful weekend and working on steem blockchain. Today I take a time for sharing about Lankathilaka Temple when I go there before three months. Lankatilaka Temple is a must visit for anyone visiting the upcountry. Turn left from Pilimatala to Dawulagala road. M. After 4 hours you can see this temple on a rocky hill. The history of Lankathilaka Vihara is very old. Some time ago, the temple had to be climbed by climbing the ancient steps.
In this mountain name called Penhalgala rock. Before came here, I didn't knew about it. But after the discussion with a monk I could more historical details here. I can share important details with you now. Walking on the stone steps in the temple area was not easy as there was a lot of sunshine. Because when entering the temple you should remove the sandals.
A white shining dagoba was seen on the top of the Penhalgala mountain. According to Buddhism, the first place to worship is the Dagoba and we reached there. There are 3 or 4 small pilgrims with small statues of the Buddha around any dagaba. You can see it clearly. As my observation this was oldest dagoba. But recent white painting seems very fresh look.
I reached nearest to the dagoba. There were some various shapes in Sri Lankan dagobas. But of my view these dagoba very familiar shape to me. If we need to find shape of the dagoba's require to explore very closely.
That's was amazing thing to my life time. Very first time I saw five dagobas built in same place. The main stupa was completely covered by a roof, while the other four small dagobas were not fully covered. Those dagobas not painted recently. I could see small pond very closely there.
A temple is usually swept by the monks in the morning. Since we went to this temple during the day, there was a lot of trees falling down. The front hall is the hall where the disciples sit to hear the preaching of the monks.
This is the Lankatilaka Statue which was built by King Parakramabahu the Great (1153-1186 AD). This is the largest statue in the ancient Sri Lanka. The magnificent statue and the pair of tall towers on either side of the dome illustrate the specialty of the place. There is little evidence that the interior and exterior walls were adorned with paintings. Outside of the hall's wall seemed some animals carvings.
That's a Vishnu devol of Lankathilaka. That wad built for god of Vishnu.
The statue of Buddha sitting on the inside of the Buddha bears the characteristics of the Gampola era. It stands amidst two statues. The statue is not a tranquility. The eyes are terrifying. There is an attempt by the artist to attribute a divine image to the image of the Buddha. The fearsome reverence of God has been portrayed in the eyes of the Buddha, as well as in the eyes of glory.
Inside the hall I looked some of various style's carvings. Someone created like mystery animals. Old Buddhism had different meanings for it. From my knowledge I couldn't observe what's meaning there. But old artists knew why they made for the temple.
Another golden Buddha statue there. These Buddha's eyes had terrible looks like previous one. Both right and left side of Buddha statue's painted gods of Buddhism protection. I explain some information about Lankathilaka temple with photo clicks.
