Glad to see you again after connected electricity power here. I came back with traditional industry here. Many of the most advanced and most humane products of the Sinhala industry were made of coir. Unfortunately, these industries have been diminished due to other products which have been submerged in the local market.

The articles or articles written about the coir industry in Sri Lanka or their historical background are very scarce. This is because these Sinhala industries are dying. But the coir industry at that time was a major life strategy. Although you may not be able to get a comfortable sleeping mat today, it may not be as comfortable as a coir mattress. In time, we will move into new epochs. But we must not forget our pitfalls. The coir industry in Sri Lanka is confined to the coastal regions. Most commonly this occurs in the southwest coast. This industry is spread across many rural areas starting from Kalutara and passing through Beruwala and Aluthgama to Matara and passing through Matara to Dickwella. Various products can be found in these areas. These industries were very popular at the time, though they were not written history.

There were also many sub-cultures associated with this coir industry. Coir, carpets, ropes, and many other things are manufactured around the coir industry. For making coir, a coir hole is made. After that, it is often filled with seawater and stained with coconut husks. This will keep the coir away and make it easier to crack the husks. It also increases the effectiveness of the micro organism. Stacking husks is a difficult task. The husks are then crushed into fibers and used to finish the products mentioned above. Often, this industry has died out due to various substitutes. Social inequality has also affected it. But we must appreciate them. Thanks for reading.
