This Preacher Has Done A Good Work
2 Corinthians 1:23-24 (KJV)
Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
I see three aspects of the preacher’s relationship to a congregation:
Authority
Be sparing concerning discipline.
Paul made no pretense concerning his authority as an apostle, preacher and overseer of their faith. He had the authority, even the responsibility to reprove, rebuke and correct. He was in no way shy to exercise this authority when appropriate.
Faith
Grant liberty concerning faith.
On the other hand, his authority was not to usurp the liberty of conscience of any. Every person has the Scriptural liberty to worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience. The preacher must not use his rightful authority to infringe on a believer’s soul liberty, lest he be guilty of lording over God’s heritage.
Joy
Be helpful concerning joy.
The balance, it appears to me is in this aspect of the ministry. Preachers ought first to be a “helpers of your joy.” Joy comes through:
Liberty to worship,
Freedom of guilt,
Usefulness in God’s service and
Contentment in Christ
If the preacher exercises himself to help in these areas, he has done a good work.
(By the way, these same three principles apply to any level of authority and leadership, including parenting.)
