Jesus First
Mark 9:17-19 (KJV)
And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;
And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
The faithlessness displayed in this account is in their taking their trouble to Jesus’ disciples in the first place. Jesus uses His people but His people are not the source of power.
We ought to learn to run to Jesus, and not to the disciples when we are in any way in need. If we were to do that, He might very well send a disciple to our aide. Going to the disciple first will lead only to frustration and undeserved disappointment in them.
As to the disciple who is pressured by others expecting them to work a miracle they cannot; our duty is simple, fasting and prayer. Our faithlessness is demonstrated when we attempt more than that. We must never allow ourselves to believe we are the answer. We only know the One who is the answer.
