The Jemaa el-Fna square is a very famous public square in the south-west of the medina of Marrakech. Triangular in shape, it dates back to the 12th century and formed a place of justice in those times. Its function evolves towards the XVIth century to become a popular and cosmopolitan place. It becomes a symbol of the city, and has been protected since 1922 as "artistic heritage of Morocco" and the inscription in the 2000s to "intangible cultural heritage of humanity - Unesco".
Today, it is a unique and specific concentrate of countless scenes holding both real and unusual.
To be well aware of the magic of this place it is necessary to visit it in 3 stages.
In the morning: it is a space like many others where we are far from guessing what will happen in the afternoon and after dark. Hardly if you notice some signs on the ground or some water or electricity points.
In the middle of the afternoon: there are dozens of stalls that make their appearance carried by carts loaded with a whole paraphernalia and an odd odds and ends.
Foragers, street hawkers, street artists, itinerant restorers, unpack their paraphernalia and engage in the assembly of their stands.
Seeing and observing this world that seems to come out of nowhere, seeing them proceed to their respective facilities in record time is a real spectacle in itself.
Restaurateurs and gargotiers move in and the square is partly transformed into a vast open-air restaurant where you can taste the local specialties, while in the other part you will also begin to form circles and small gatherings.
The place begins to reveal its hidden side and we can suspect what is going on and will happen overnight.
At nightfall :
Restaurants itinerant and attractions having formed and installed, the place fills up, becomes quickly black of world with a festive family and good-natured atmosphere.
