This is an exerp from a book of Sunday School lessons by Lon Woodrum first published in 1949.

The Forgotten God

Once upon a time there was a God in Nineveh. His name was Nisroch. You never heard much about him, did you? Well, don't worry- nobody else ever heard much about him, either! I suppose we should not have heard of him at all if his Highness, the Emperor Sennacherib, ruler of Assyria, hadn't worshiped him! And, perhaps, we wouldn't have known that fact save that Sennacherib's sons Adrammelech and Sharezer, pinned him to the floor with their swords while he worshiped!

Sennacherib cut quite a swath in his day. He did all right till he attacked Jerusalem. Then "the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, and breathed in the face of the foe as he passed," and Sennacherib was broken. For Sennacherib had attacked a king called Hezekiah, who had a God called Jehovah! And Jehovah was not the sort of God to be defeated! The little Nisrochs bobbed up here and there, and went down, lost to history; but Jehovah kept on, always!

Poor little Nisroch! Sitting up there, dead- eyed and stupid- faced, while a king thrashed in the death- throes at the foot of his pedestal! Impotent little god, on his way to oblivion! If he could have done any good for Sennacherib, maybe he could have lasted a while longer! But he wasn't up to it! He "didn't have it"! He slid down the abyss of forgotten deities.

Well Nisroch had no business up there, trying to be God! "He that is God let him be God!" The challenge stands. Now then: take a look at Jehovah. He's still God! Now, isn't He?

Me: There is no god like our God! Blessings!
