Live Loop Artists Are Bending Sound In Creative Ways

in #music8 years ago

Loops are short sections of sound, usually 2 to 4 bars in length, that repeat over and over again. This seamless repetition of a performance has turned into an art form in and of itself.

Any small piece of a performance can be looped and multiple loops can be layered together into a completely new composition.

Artists are getting quite creative and the technology has evolved to make looping an affordable option for an artist to create their own one man, or woman, show.

This is a short post to introduce you to the concept and share with you some creative examples of looping.

As you can see, looping expands the musical, creative pallet an artist has to work with and is very intuitive to use.

In future posts, I'll share with you some of the projects I'm working on involving looping.

I hope you enjoyed listening to these artists.

Looping is just repeating a sample, what you are talking about is called overdubbing or just dubbing. It's an old guitar technique. It was very popular during the early 60's. The first overdubs are back from the 20's.
Overdubbing is the process of layering different recordings on top of each other , sometimes they can be loops.

Les Paul was the guy who pioneered (I don't say invented, but he did invent plenty of things we take for granted as far as the recording and record manipulation is concerned) it in the 20's.

I think the musician Jason Gray has been using this technique for a few yers in his live shows.

It let's a one man show sound like a whole band!

Nice post!

Thank you for posting this! I didn't have time to watch the videos until now, but wow, I love what these people are doing. Very excited to hear your projects! Do you know of any good resources for a newbie wanting to learn how to do this?

There are lots of tutorials online that can teach you how to make loops and even free loop samples.
These are some cool tools for recording them:

Check out the Y2K live looping fest. There are many talented, yet unkown, artists in that community.
