Science Saturday - Clean Coins - Chemistry 101steemCreated with Sketch.

in #homeschool7 years ago (edited)

What you need :

  • Dirty coins (my kids preferred the 5 and 10 centavo ones)
  • 1/4 cup White Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Rock Salt
  • Glass bowl or jar
  • Stirrer

What to do :

  1. Slowly pour the vinegar into the jar.
  2. Add the salt into the mixture.
  3. Stir until the salt dissolves.
  4. Drop the coins into the jar, keep stirring, and watch the science happen.

    What to expect :

The coins come out more vibrant in color and the 1 peso silver coin that had black stuff all over it is now shiny.
There is some pretty fancy chemistry going on in that little bowl of yours. It turns out that vinegar is an acid, and the acid in the vinegar reacts with the salt to remove what chemists call copper oxide which was making your pennies dull. [1]
They put it in dishwashing soap afterwards when I was too busy cleaning up. Some of the coins ended up having a little bit of rusty color at the sides. -----

Watch out every Saturday for more Science experiments, field trips, and discussions with these two!

    What a great idea!!!
I don't think my kids do such experiments at school.
We have to try this project this weekend :)))

They loved it. Please share with us how it went. 😉

    This is great @luvabi!
I also plan to document our homeschooling adventure. I am anxious about it. 😅

I'm also anxious but we moms try our best 😉🍷

Nice one @luvabi. Are you homeschooling your kids?

I'm doing it with the International British Academy curriculum.

    yep:)

This is awesome! Way to go being motivated to do hands on, fun, learning activities with your kids in your spare time. It is definitely easier to watch tv or something, but the memories and the knowledge you are giving them is so precious. We homeschool, so I'm following you now because lots of your ideas look great!

Thanks! we're new to homeschooling and have lots to learn about the process as well ;) followed back
