Fortnite copies PUBG
Heippa, Steemians!
Today i am talking about
Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds studio Bluehole’s recent threat of “further action” against Epic Games after Epic’s release of a Battle Royale mode for Fortnite presents a few questions concerning copied games and what can and cannot legally be used when you’re deriving inspiration from another copyrighted game.
Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG, is a survival game where 100 players square off in a large island environment to see who can find the best weapons and gear while fighting the other players to the death. The game includes a moving blue wall (known as storm in Fortnite :D) that holds players into the same area to make sure rounds don’t go on for too long. In my opinion that's just because then PUBG and Fortnite will have to run servers for longer time and that will waste more money.
Breakout
With the breakout success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it was obvious that other studios would start creating similar experiences. One of the most aggressive has been Epic Games, which announced a battle royale mode for its survival game Fortnite, which will be free to all players starting September 26th. Epic has even gone so far as to cite PUBG as an inspiration. “We love battle royale games like PUBG and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version,” Epic explained.
Fortnite original things
Fortnite: Battle Royale also includes … well, basically all of that cough. The trailer begins with a statement saying the game was inspired by PUBG and games in that genre. None of this is subtle.
