Self-discipline and slow training in the age of instant gratification
"Homer", Bargue drawing in sight-size technique by David Heskin, 2015
Working with instructors in the atelier tradition truly sharpens one's skills..
At a relatively later point in this copy drawing, it was pointed out to me that the entire profile of the right side of the face was about half a millimeter too wide. My inclination was to start over, rather than to undo all the imperfect progress I had already gotten attached to..
If it was just me, I would never have fixed it, but ultimately once the inaccuracy was pointed out to me, I couldn't deny it. This rigors of this particular studio practice are not about how you feel about your drawing. It is rather about sharpening your abilities and using the tools at hand..also, it forces you not to be lazy. Any lapse in focus will likely just create more mistakes to correct later.
The key is not to lose yourself or your sanity in the practice.
Evidently half of the students that get accepted into one of the prestigious schools in Florence eventually drop out.
The atelier system certainly has its religious adherents, while at the core are those who want to reclaim and revive the western realist traditions.
Yeah I remember when I was in the atelier that the last average remaining students in the final 4th year were about 1 to 4, as opposed to the initial 8 to 12 students. I remember students breaking down and crying in their first and second years...it was crazy! But who could blame them though right?
Drawing with bargue method needs a lot of patience , but the result is very soft and profesional , i also did one of them years ago as my homework :)
