Witness Update - 6/6/2017 - More Human Than Human

I've officially been a Steemit backup witness for 7 days now, and I've already made it to position 40! Thank you all for your support.

What I've done so far:

  • Learned a lot and gained practical experience on the process of running a steemit witness node along with a reliable price feed which updates every hour.

  • Wrote a piece explaining the importance of voting for witnesses.

  • Wrote a bash script to monitor my witness node and made it available to the other witnesses as well. This is helpful because it can alert a witness before their node starts missing blocks.

  • Wrote about chainBB to raise awareness for that project and how you can donate to it just by using it. My chainBB posts raised 91 STEEM in just three days!

  • Used my Exchange Transfer Report this week to try out @heimindanger's tool for allocating post rewards to other users.

  • Started recording some videos to help with blockchain education which I will soon make available via understandingblockchainfreedom.com

  • Most importantly, I successfully updated my witness node to version 0.19.0 in preparation for the next hard fork! The whole process took about 39 minutes, including a full re-sync of the blockchain.

It's been a really fun first week as a backup witness!

Thanks again for all your words of encouragement and support. I really appreciate it.

My witness announcement post is here.

I hope you're having a great week so far!

Already in top 40. You deserved it. Enjoy.

So glad to see that you are quickly succeeding as a witness! More great things to come!

Wrote a bash script to monitor my witness node and made it available to the other witnesses as well.

Really? You shared the uptime script to other witnesses aka competitors as well?

Well isn't that a fine example of your character. You don't mind helping others, and you believe in a fair, stable system. Very nice job.

With people like you and @timcliff and a few others... I feel very confident that the system has a very solid back end with responsible and well intentioned people keeping it running.

Fabulous. I'll be upvoting your witness user soon...

I don't view other witnesses as competitors. That's the beautiful thing about delegated proof of stake, we get assigned to validate the network according to the protocol and the votes of the community. That enables us to collaborate instead of compete so that everyone benefits.

Yes, but you get awarded in steem based on block solves block signing and confirmation. If other witnesses miss blocks, you have a greater chance of being next in line to solve it witness the transactions and sign the block. It doesn't matter... share the wealth. :)

P.S. Just upvoted your witness.

It's not a matter of "solving" a block, it's a matter of cryptographically *signing" it which is validation the software you run has confirmed it's transactions. Using the word "solve" is a misnomer and carry-over from Bitcoin mining concepts. DPoS is a different animal.

However, I commend you @intelliguy and the OP for all you do to further the core agorist principles that bind us together, and look forward to participating with both of you and do my part to further the vision of freedom for the individual under the NAP.

Thank you immensely for the clarification. It would help if I would strive to use the proper language to avoid propagating incorrect lingo.

I've adjusted my comment with strikethrough so that my corrections are now obvious. I will try to improve how I talk about DPoS and witnesses, it's very important for us to avoid bitcoin-related carry overs, because we are a completely different animal as you said.

Thanks again!

share the wealth

Indeed, there's plenty to go around. :)

You got my vote, luke. Just dont loose 3000 steem again👀💰🤣👊🏻🍺🤑😂

Haha, for real, right!

At least I didn't put a password in the memo. :)

Thanks for your vote!

Good morning, Luke.

Voted for your witness.

Thanks for posting the details. I might go your way :)

Nice post! Thanks. Please follow me: @martinst

Now if only you'd dispense of that capitalism nonsense :P

We've spent hours on this topic already both here on the blockchain and in chat.

Capitalism: an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.

How did you become a witness? Why did someone build a datacenter and decide to rent a server to you?

You and this entire network benefits from capitalism. Collectivist socialism has been shown again and again to harm large numbers of people. Does that mean capitalism is perfect? No, far from it. It is, to me, the best system we currently have for determining value in the chaotic world we live in. If something better comes along which gets proven out with evidence, I'll gladly accept it.

Sorry, that was intended to be a bit tongue in cheek. Didn't come across that way.

I know, I know. The conversation sometimes gets old because I see both sides in many ways fighting against the same things (fraud, corruption, abusive control, waste, actions which lower human wellbeing, etc) but they use different language so they argue with each other over words. I keep watching stuff like this though to try to stay out of an echo chamber (if at all possible). I think some aspects of socialism are noble and others are naive and destructive. I also think many fans of free market, mutually beneficial exchange and individuals investing their savings for profit and production gloss over other very real challenges which haven't yet been solved by markets. Hopefully we can all agree blockchain technologies allow for different ways to collectively come to consensus without violence.

Honing in on cervantes, nice! Only a matter of time before you crack top 30, I just know it! :D

congrats man! I hope you just go up and up and up on that list! Have you ever posted or could you point me to someone who is a witness thats posted their machine they use? I'm interested in learning what it takes to really mine things. Thanks in advance!

This may help. It's not really mining because it's delegated proof of stake. Search on steemit and you'll find many posts about getting a witness node going. That's what I did.

Can I get a witness? Oh hey its luke, congrats..u get a vote to keep u there from me
