FRUIT CACTUS (ENGINE CACTUS, INDIAN ENGINE) - (prickly pear)

in #cactus6 years ago

I have seen this great cactus on the roads, houses, yards many times.

But such a great desire to photograph it, I had it for the first time!

Fruit cactus growing in Cyprus is a thick-growing cactus of the Opuntia (prickly pear).

The motherland of this cactus is Mexico.
But it grows in Israel, in the north of Africa, the Italian islands and in Cyprus.

In Cyprus there is a special variety of it, smooth, without spines.

Her young shoots have many useful substances.
These shoots are cut into salads.
Although I have never had a chance to try this salad.

To members of my family, this fruit is very like.
To me, for some reason, no.
But I think that I should try it again, maybe this time I will like it.
Well, not for nothing that all Cypriots like this fruit!

Sort:

I like the fruits and this year, I am going to try cooking the young leaves. There are some growing nearby

From this cactus still make marmalade.
Have you tried marmalade?

Good Fortune

They are definitely quite pretty; I'm familiar with the fruit as edible and quite good; the leaves/pads are quite popular in the southern USA and generally known as "nopalitos" in the Spanish speaking areas.

=^..^=

Very nice looking fruits!
I would like to try some one day!!

Thank you!
Yes, try it!

Great photos. Growing all over the world coming from Mexico sounds like a weed. I just did a post of Prickly Pear taking over a cemetery. :-)

Thank you!
Yes, many call it a prickly pear.
I, the other day, decided to try again (I did not like it before).
Its taste reminds me of the taste of the Morus, only the Morus is more sweet.
