and having some time as well, to visit one of the most signifiant dacic cities in Romania with a rich history regarding the so called, Dacia and its people. It is one of the most important areas in Romania where the dacic people were living and maybe some of you have heard the awesome stories of these wonderful people, who lived here lead by the great king Decebalus. On an old ceramic pot was found written “Decebalus per Scorillo” which may lead to the fact that this might mean “Decebalus son of Scorillo”. Scorillo might be identical to Coryllus or Scorillus, being indentified as possible dacic king prior to Duras, the latter assuming that was Decebalus uncle.

Decebalus is considered a national hero in Romania and has been portrayed in so many movies, literary works, sculptures.

Before entering the city you will notice the imposing fortress that can be seen from the distance stand on the mountain rocks. I was able to visit the fortress and take some closer photos.

The whole city has its own history well kept. I think if the Earth would be able to speak, we could hear the voices of our ancestors calling their people. It’s a sacred place. In the same time, the word Deva in the hinduism concept means “heavenly, divine, anything of excellence”

Interesting … this being just a coincidence? Regarding the late architecture of this city, you can find this kind of buildings from the early times of 20th century, the so called “jugendstil” which appeared as well in Transylvania.

Not so far from Deva you can find another awesome place, named Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa.

This was the capital of the Roman Dacia and it was built on the ground of a military camp from the 5th macedonian legion and by the very beginning the ancient city received the title of colonia and as well the status of ius italicum. It has an area of 30 hectares and the population was estimated between 20000-25000 people. Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa was considered to be an important political religious and administrative centre between the 2nd and the 3rd centuries.

Even if this ancient city was destroyed by the goths, the actual site remained in ruins, well preserved with its amphitheatres, forums and remnants of several Temples. You can see the way are preserved some of the old stones:

Some historians say that the city was built between 106 -107 but some consider that it was between 108 -110 ...

There are some inscriptions found in the beginning of 14th century on which stays written:"Caesar Nerva Traianus Augustus in imperatoris filius divi Nervae, Colonia Grauiscae Dacus D. Terentius Scaurianus eius praesidi"During the reign of Hadrian the city was renamed as Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacica Sarmizegetusa and between the years of 222-235 the city achieved the status of metropolis."C. Arrius Quadratus C. Arrius Antoninus filius agere praetorem imperatorem Augustum Aeliae Sarmizegetusa Colonia Ulpia Traiana"

The title of legatus pre praetore it's a the official title of the governor of some imperial regions of the Roman Empire.

Everyone who will travel to Romania, feel free and stop by and visit this amazing city and do not forget to insert in your schedule the awesome Deva Jazz festival. Also do not forget about the historic site of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa.

Here's a short moment from the soundcheck captured in one photo
