The Australians call it the Eighth Miracle of the World , but in fact this is perhaps underestimation. The Great Barrier Reef is the only living organism on the planet that is visible from outer space. Spreading more than 1930 km between 16 and 80 km from the Queensland coast, it is virtually not a coral reef but a sum of 2900 smaller reefs, with about 300 islands scattered among them. The world's largest marine reserve, the Great Barrier Reef is inhabited by astonishingly many species of sea creatures, including 500 variegated hard and soft coral, 1500 species of fish, and 4,000 species of mollusks.

You can sail on it, snorkel in itor fly over it, but only by diving in the depths of this exclusive area is it possible to really grasp its diversity. Fortunately, there are no agencies that will promise you the ultimate reef experience. The Quiksilver is the latest technology in the catamaran turbulent wave turbo engine that carries 90-minute trips to an anchored glass platform where you can swim, snorkel or aqua-dive; or travel to a semi-submerged vessel and listen to the comment of your guide that explains to you the wonders of the underwater world on the other side of the glass.

Those looking for a longer experience can spend four days aboard the luxury minicircle ships Correl Princes and Correl Princes II. 35-meter ships offer snorkeling, guided excursions to coral viewing, reef fishing, and evening presentations by experienced marine biologists. If you've always dreamed of learning to dive with scuba gear, qualified instructors will help you spend your first hours under water. Most people think the Great Barrier Reef is the last word in deepwater diving, but beyond that, the waters of the lesser known Coral Sea can be even more wonderful.

The sights of this virgin clean wilderness with crystal clear waters and uninhabited coral atollsincludes a huge perpendicular pad and 60- to 90-meter visibility. Imagine giant mussels up to 2 meters wide, 150-pound grown-ups and countless tortoises and sharks along with a remarkable variety of solid corals and reef fish of all sizes and sizes. Some paddling trips include a visit to the remains of the broken Yongala, a 175-meter miracle that is said to be the site of the greatest concentration and variety of marine life in the world - a mind-boggling underwater experience.
