Day 1 At Convention

I went to Crit Hit 3 today, and it was awesome. I didn't stay terribly long, because I'm always super-busy to begin with and I have a lot of stuff coming up soon, but it was a fun experience. We played velotha's flock with six people (man was I glad I made six pre-made characters that were ready to go), and it was really enjoyable as an experience.

It also highlighted some things that could be improved. The rules are simple, but not explained well; in a game that attempts to have simple core mechanics and interesting characters with unique(ish) schticks, that's a bit of a problem.

I was a little under-prepared, and my game didn't run for quite the whole scheduled time slot, but I think people enjoyed it. It was an opportunity to really reflect on a lot of the moving parts, since I hadn't touched the game seriously for a while (other than going back to prep for the game), and it was cool. When you consider the fact that it was my first game at a convention, I'm going to go with it being a success.

We also played using cards, which was really fun as an alternative to dice rolls. It's a bit of a problem when the cards aren't perfectly shuffled, but when combined with a less restrictive approach to requiring tests and more of a focus on moving forward it did a lot to keep things moving smoothly.

I'm going back again tomorrow to catch a couple of the panels; not sure if I'm going to find a game to play in or not.
