The true Christian has the mark of promise
"In whom you also are, after you have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and, having believed in it, you have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until redemption. of the possession acquired, to the praise of his glory "(Ephesians 1: 13-14).
Paul, by the Holy Spirit, wrote to the believers in Ephesus saying that they were in Christ and had received a seal, that is, a mark. A mark that Jesus had promised, therefore, the mark of promise. Mark that consists in the glorious presence of the Spirit of God that Christ, in his own, made to dwell.
In the days in which we are living, days when the theology of material prosperity is in vogue in the midst of the people of God, when we speak of "Mark of the promise", most soon think of a new car, in a house of luxury or in a lot of money in the bank. But the mark of God's promise in our lives is something much more than all this, the best thing is that God could give his children, and Jesus talked about this:
"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" (Luke 11:13).
The best and most valuable than any wealth of this world is the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, guiding us in all the truth of God.
God loved in a profound way all the human beings that he created, so much so that he gave his only begotten son to die for each one of them. That being the case, he very much wants to mark everyone with his promised Holy Spirit. But the Lord is not an intruder, so he needs the authorization of each one of us to come in us to live.
But in what way can we give you this authorization?
Upon hearing his word. Believing truly in his holy gospel.
See what Paul said that those who believed they were in Christ, but this only happened, he says, "having heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation." And as a natural consequence of believing in this Gospel, they also received the Holy Spirit mark "After having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise" This mark is, therefore, to those who believe in the Gospel and places in practice in your life!
In addition to being the mark of God's promise in our lives, the word is also said here that the Holy Spirit is the "earnest of our inheritance." But it speaks of guarantee, in biblical times it was common that when someone made a promise to another, he gave something as a guarantee that he would keep his word. God also did so with us, he promised us salvation and eternal life through faith in his son Jesus, but he did not leave us with only the promise, as a guarantee that he will fulfill it, he gave us his Spirit as a garment to hurry to dwell in us.
If the Spirit is the mark that God has placed on us as a guarantee and pledge of our eternal inheritance, we must certainly take care never to lose his presence, otherwise we will also lose the right to our inheritance. Once David was rebuked because of a serious sin he committed, then he repented and wrote a song in the form of a prayer talking about his fear in losing the presence of the Holy Spirit, which put at risk the joy of his salvation:
"Do not throw me out of your presence, and do not remove your Holy Spirit from me, give me back the joy of your salvation ..." (Psalm 51: 11-12)
Like David, we also have to ensure that, through our sins, we do not come to cause sadness in the Holy Spirit that dwells in us. Because it is through their presence that they are marked to be saved and redeemed by Christ: "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption" (Ephesians 4:30).
Fleeing from sin, so as not to cause sadness to the Holy Spirit, thus maintaining with me the guarantee of my inheritance in glory.
