๐#fruitsandveggiesmonday- Crazy Cucurbits! ๐
For @lenasveganliving's #fruitsandveggiesmonday challenge I'm submitting a photograph of some beautiful pumpkins I spotted on a recent shopping trip.
I'm sure with Halloween approaching, there will be lots of pumpkin posts, but to be honest, here in the UK, the only time we really see a lot pumpkins is in the approach to All Hallows' Eve.
We aren't really a nation of pumpkin eaters, seemingly preferring butternut squash, so the only ones we ever really see are traditional orange ones that are used to carve Jack O' Lanterns and we don't often use them in cooking.
So I was surprised to see this amazing array when I went out shopping, especially as I found these in Aldi of all places!
I have never seen such an array of shapes, vibrant colours and patterns in the supermarket so had to take a photo of these amazing vegetables.
I was curious to find out what family these alien vegetables belong to and this is what I found-
''Cucurbitaceae. The Cucurbitaceae, also called cucurbits and the gourd family, are a plant family consisting of about 965 species in around 95 genera, the most important of which are: Cucurbita โ squash, pumpkin, zucchini, some gourds.''
Well, you learn something new every day don't you- cucurbits.
That's some trivia to store away for the pub quiz! ๐
And all in the picture are delicious!! hope you took some home.
These are very common in Canada and they are mainly used as decorations for Thanksgiving and halloween. I love them, they are adorable, but I also prefer to cook squash. The big orange pumpkin is mostly used to make pumpkin pie for at this time of year ๐บ๐๐บ
Thank you so much my Dear for your lovely entry...........nice photos and insightful info ๐
