The Importance Calcium

I have mentioned this in previous posts, but thought that I would just bring it out again.

Calcium is important when it comes to growing vegetables and especially for those of you that grow tomatoes and peppers.
Although your organic ferilizers have calcium included, it may not be sufficient for certain crops - especially the ones mentioned above.

An easy way to add extra calcium into your soil is with egg shells.

I dry out the egg shells and then crush them into a fine powder.
This is then added to my soil as well as into my worm bin.

I do this frequently so that my tomatoes and peppers get plenty of calcium.

The lack of calcium in the soil can cause blossom end rot - this can be seen if the fruit develops brown marks at the bottom of the fruit and the same with peppers.

By adding the crushed egg shells on a regular basis creates a constant supply of calcium in the soil for your plants.

The egg shell method is easy, cheap and a great way to ensure that there is always sufficient calcium available to your plants.
