Taking Stock

Like most things in life, we have success and failures and when it comes to gardening, this applies too.

Just looking at my plants in containers, I can see both.

My rocket - which has self seeded looks like it has been on steroids as it has grown so large and I cannot keep up with harvesting the leaves - I am not complaining as I love it in salads.

The same thing has happened with my italian parsley - also self seeded and has popped up in almost every container.

Last season my marigolds were gorgeous and although I did not plant any this season, they are appearing in most of the containers and I am happy about this as they are great companion plants to deter pests - especially with tomatoes.
Talking about tomatoes, my seedlings have all come up so I am looking forward to these as I have a couple of new varieties planted.

The one thing that has not done well is my New Zealand spinach - it seemed to start off alright, but then it bolted - not sure why but maybe the weather got too warm too soon.

Sort:

Interesting reading about the self seeding in containers. I have had trouble growing the New Zealand spinach here, but the person who gave it to me, has it all over his garden. He's not 10 miles from here, but has a more protected location.

Mine went to seed and I cannot think why - when I lived in Durban it grew like a weed - maybe it does not like being in a container.

It's always quite sad to see seedlings that fail to grow, but it just happens at times...the learning to garden better never ends.

Yes we learn all the time and it can be quite humbling.
