Rooting cuttings in water

Many people do not know how easy it is to root plant cuttings in water - and it is so easy.

I am not saying that you cannot root plants in sand and soil, but one may forget to keep them moist and then there is failure which is very discouraging.

I take cuttings and pop them into some water and keep them inside and within about a week, the tiny roots start to appear.
I then leave them in the water until there is a really good bunch of roots formed and only then do I pot up in a container.
Once the plants have settled in, I leave them in the container until the roots start to appear at the bottom of the pot - this means that the plants are ready to be put out into the garden - or into a bigger container if you wish to keep them growing there.

The image below shows a few thyme cuttings that have started to produce their delicate roots.

Some of my favourite plants to root in this way include rosemary, basil, perennial basil, oregano, mint.
Once rooted and potted up, these herbs make lovely gifts for friends and family and cost you nothing but a little bit of your time.

I thought that was thyme.

Im doing this with mint, basil and rosemary as we speak.
I will have to consider perennial basil and oregano, too.

That is good to hear - yes do the others too.

This is actually a great idea about gifts. And I am interested in what plants we can grow this way. Herbs sounds very good. We can only grow things in pots, though, and on a small space, since we have a small apartment on the 13-th floor. A garden there seems like a miracle almost ;)

Most plants can be rooted in water, but if your space is limited then maybe herbs are the way to go because you can eat them too.

I've never rooted herbs in water before, as they grow outside. About 1/3 of the plants in the house have lived in water for many years. I just never got them planted. :)) I should try some of my herbs in water inside.

It is a good way to increase your herbs

Not done cuttings yet, but my mother used to do lots and had all sorts of plants all over the place. Just got 9000 steem in my wallet so am seeing how much I can upvote now...

That is good news indeed
