Pavement specials

Every time during the change from autumn through to winter, it is wonderful to see what I call my "pavement specials" - that pop up through the brick paving.

I know that most people would pull them out as if they were weeds, but the fact is, they are not weeds - they are seeds from last season that know it is time to appear.

I have never been the type of gardener that likes everything neat and tidy - to me, a garden should be a bit like a fruit salad with all sorts mixed in.
Some times we plant things in the garden in an area that we would like them to grow - only to find that they do not do well.
In fact, the photos below are examples of plants that despite my efforts to get them to grow in the garden soil, they prefer to pop up in the paving - I tried transplanting some into the garden, but they refused to grow and so now I just leave them be.

Here is the dandelion which comes up like clock work every year and as it is one of the first flowers to come up in winter for the bees, I leave alone for their enjoyment.

The lovely ground cover erigeron refuses to grow anywhere but in the paving - but what the heck, it still looks beautiful with its small daisy flowers amongst the paving.

Lastly, we have the humble nasturtium which I love and which will grow anywhere for me but also pops up in the most unexpected places.
The bees love the flowers as do I, - they help to keep aphids off my veggies and all parts of the plant are edible.

I love nasturtiums! And they are edible 🌼🍴

I love "pavement specials" and that's a great name for them! We have violets as well as dandelions that love to spring up in the cracks in our driveway, and I think they're awesome. Also...

I have those in the near vicinity of my garden as well! I don't mind the last two, but that first one... I really dislike them, and so I do end up uprooting those... but it is near on impossible when they are between pavement stones... I end up pouring some vinegar on their roots!

They are edible too - and wine can be made out of them if you have enough -the bees love them too.

They are definitely full of the vigor of life! When weeds come up in my parent cracks, I treat them with a little vinegar. It’s very effective!

I think mine look strong because I do not pull them out.

Wild flower is beautiful. And those are like a symbol of struggle for life. Wonderful!

Nature brings us great things in life and some great flowers to admire for the pleasure of our eyes!

Interesting. Plants that will grow only in the paving. What a novelty!
