Drawing Life #13 : Playing with Scribbles and Expressionism

One of the joys of art is discovering and playing with new styles.

My friend, who is a fellow art lover wanted to see how I create my scribble style portraits. So I drew him in the scribble style, while he watched and observed the technique that I used. He loves to experiment with art and try new techniques.

He came to art and painting later in his life, but it is something that brings him a lot of joy. So it’s never too late to try something new!

Once he saw how I drew the scribble style, he showed me some examples of portraits in the expressionist style. I was curious and wanted to play with that technique, specially the way you can play with the paint using a palette knife. It was a challenge at first, but I enjoyed it a lot.

So what you see here is my first expressionism style portrait.

What do you think? Which style in the post do you prefer and why? What techniques or style is your favourite when you create your artworks? and what would you like to try that you haven’t tried before?

Thanks for reading and remember to follow me on steemit if you would like to see more artwork from me @livvu

hello. nice to see your work. Both works are so good!!
The left one is cool, realistic and makes me feel trust with the object. it make me wonder who draws. But right one is very warm, passionate and I feel love for the object. So I imagine the model of the picture.

So I think it is a difficult question to make a decision.....
I do not speak English well, but I want to tell you something about your work.

Thank you very much for your comment @beingsiin. Your feeling of art is profound !!

I like both :) Not intending that to be a vanilla answer, but it's the truth. I don't really prefer any one style over another whether it be my work or others.
There are things I like and things I don't like, but I think most of those things are style agnostic :) This might sound like an overly technical answer, but it's how I think about these things. Basically I try to identify the visual characteristics of the aspect of different pieces of art that I like and that's what I try to bring over into my own work.
For example looking at a painter like John Singer Sargent, the part of his oil paintings that I really love is this variety of area's with very precise detail, opposed by other areas which, while still precise, are suggested with much less detail. For me, I try to take that idea and apply it in my work.
Rant over, beautiful stuff! Keep it up!

I like the first one more because it looks more like an avatar and the colors are more simple and neutral in some ways. The second reminds me of the 1970's in the USA. Agreed that both are good and it depends.

Thank you @joeyarnoldvn I really appreciate your opinion!!

Yes I also love to focus more on some important details and make other details more vague. Same like in photography, some blurred details or blurred background make all details more beautiful right?! Thank you so much for sharing your great opinion about art styles @midlet
