DIY SOS

One of the things about living in Taiwan is not being able to (officially) watch many of the BBC programmes. In UK, you have to pay a TV licence fee if you want to watch TV, even if its via the internet. The cost of the TV licence fee is £154.50 or around USD192 per year. That money is used to fund the BBC operations. It's a pity that they don't extend this service to people outside of UK. I'm sure there are many people who would subscribe to the service.

One program I used to enjoy very much is called DIY SOS. The program is hosted by Nick Knowles a British TV presenter, he's the guy in the center of the photo below. His team consists of a builder, electrician, plasterer and carpenter who are in the group photo. There's also a bigger support team behind them.

As you may have guessed, the program is about DIY, doing work in the house. In each episode, Nick and his team goes to help out a family to do a makeover in their house. Normally someone in the household has some health problems or injury, or something has happened to the family and they need to improve their living conditions. Nick and his team will rip out, refit and make the necessary adapatation to the house to make it suitable for the family's requirement. Today I saw a clip on the internet about one of the latest episodes. It is quite typical of the work they do, but the owner has suffered a very tragic accident.

In March 2017, there was a terrorist attack in London. A terrorist drove his car at high speed along Westminister Bridge, outside the Houses of Parliament killing 5 people and injuring many. One of the injured was a police officer, Kris, who was left paralysed and wheelchair bound. Since the accident Kris was unable to return home as his house is not suitable for him and the wheelchair. He had to continue rehabilitation at the hospital and can't spend time with his children and wife.

Nick and this team, and a big group of volunteers went in to give Kris's house a makeover, widening doorways, installing an elevator, and making all the rooms wheelchair friendly. All the transformation was done in 9 days! The result is that Kris can now move back to be with his family and continue his rehabilitation at home. The programme always ends very emotionally when the family are taken around the house to see the changes. Then they go outside to thank the team who helped to make their life much better. In this particular episode, because it was such a high profile injury, there was a big team of local volunteers, in addition to the normal DIY SOS team to help with this transformation.

The endings always brings a tear or two to my eyes. Where's my hankerchief gone?

What an amazing story, of course it's really touching since the officer and his family will enjoy a relief of the pain that tragic incident caused in their lives. Hopefully incidents such as that one never repeats again.

Best regards.

Most of the TV that I watch here in the States is BBC programs. I am watching Granchester right now. Our Public Television picks up a lot of the BBC shows, and I am a big fan!

I've never watched Grantchester before. Actually I normally watch whatever my husband watches as he likes the detective dramas as well.

I know the American are quite a big fan of our period dramas, particularly Downton Abbey, which happens to be my favourite as well ^_^

I loved Downton Abby, and Poldark is a favorite, too. I can pretty much bet that I will love any BBC shows that are on our PBS Masterpiece Theater.

high five to Downton Abbey!!!
