What Does It Take To Be An Astronaut?
During the early years of the Space program, the space organizations had no idea how the human body would react in space. They needed humans to give real time feedback in dangerous missions and needed to keep this top secret, so president Eisenhower decided that Military was the best place to look for potential candidates who were most equipped to tackle space.
That was the first time a criteria was set to select potential astronauts. A person needed to have:
1) Graduate from a test pilot school with more than 1500 flight hours
2) Hold a bachelors in Engineering
This led to the first batch of astronauts having 2 navy pilots, 3 Air-force pilots and 1 Marine Pilot. This continued on for the next few batches, until scientific experiments took the stage in space and NASA started looking for Candidates with Academic background with PhD's.
