Does anyone remember 'The Communicator' from Star Wars? Now, that technology seems to have finally become reality. A San-Francisco Based Startup 'BabelOn' has created a device which can bridge the gap using a technology called Speech Synthesis. Which means all the words coming out of your mouth can now be automatically translated to any language along with an Accent.

So far the technology is only capable of translating speech into about 8 languages, but its only a matter of time until all languages are integrated. The company has been building this for the last 13 years, which has immense use in practically every field which involves communication. One more reason why this technology is important is the fact that now endangered languages can be preserved through this technology allowing people to still communicate in those languages. Though its still a couple of years away from commercial sale, but the prototype has shown to be very promising.

This also raises an important issue about identity theft, as this technology could be utilized for malicious purposes by stealing your voice and potentially use it against you. So a form of encryption would be required to still make our voices unique as well as some form of moderation where the technology could be prevented from being tweaked. The company is running an IndieGogo campaign to raise funds in return for a fanny pack with bluetooth speakers and a synthesized audio file. As the technology is still in its initial stages, the costs are high as much as $50,000 to translate a song in your own voice. So you are better off waiting for a while until the prices drop to a reasonable level.

I heard about this and even saw a commercial about it, I remember it was a funny one. Well lets hope technology evolves and this is affordable for everyone. Until then people should just all start learning Sign-Language (In my opinion). It is easy and everyone could communicate in one language.

Yeah, there were many efforts to create an auxiliary language to have everyone speak a common second language, but it was a failed effort. Esperanto was one such language, if you've heard of it.

No, haven't heard of it, but I will definitely check it out!

Hi, I am folowing you but cannot upvote due to low voting power.
This will help me very much with my trips to places in the universe!

ah its okay. I just want to get more views and people to see my work :)

Actually I was kind of learning to speak Italian with the help of the Duolingo app and I was making great progress after about 6 months of continuous practicing. But when I started hearing about these advancements in live translation devices I lost my drive to study another language.

We have come a long way, and I guess my time is spend more wisely studying other things than languages..

But this technology is quite far away from commercial use. And even when it comes out in the next 4-5 years, it'll still be expensive and might not function as good as learning how to speak a language. And there is more to a language than just a sequence of words. Understanding them from a linguistic manner is beneficial to understanding a lot of their culture as well.
