Switzerland (German: the Schweiz, French: la Suisse, Italian: la Svizzera, Rhaeto-Romanic: Svizra, Latin: Helvetia), officially the Swiss Confederation (also known as Swiss Confederation or Swiss Confederation) (German: Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, Frans: Confédération suisse, Italian: Confederazione Svizzera, Rhaeto-Romance: Confederaziun svizra, Latin: Confoederatio Helvetica), is a country in the middle of Europe with neighbors in the north, France in the west, Italy in the south, Austria and Liechtenstein in the East.
Switzerland is an inner state with an area of 41,284 km² [4] and approximately 8.1 million inhabitants (June 2014). In administrative terms, it is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons. Switzerland does not officially have a capital city, but Bern fulfills that role in practice and is also officially designated as 'federal city'. It is also the place where the federal government has resided since the creation of the federal state. [5] Switzerland has a history of neutrality: in 1815, the Congress of Vienna recognized the eternal neutrality of the country by the European superpowers. It is not a member of the European Union, but is economically dependent on the EU.
