Buddhist architecture in Korea
The Pohyon Buddhist Temple was originally a set of 30 temples that were destroyed by US imperialism in the Korean War in 1950. The Socialist government recovered 10 temples.
In this complex there is a rare library of original Buddhist philosophy books written in Chinese. During the Korean War, monks saved this library from the plundering of imperialist soldiers by hiding books in caves in the mountains.
The North Korean monks are patriots and fought together with the communists for the expulsion of the Japanese (Japan occupied Korea for 35 years) and in the Korean war.
Today there are 200 Buddhist centres in the remote mountains of North Korea. They receive government support with supplies, maintenance and reform of the temples. Enjoy these photos taken by a Brazilian tourist in 2017.
