In Europe there are many art revolutions that have been evoked and many legends were born. Today I'd like to take you on a tour of the art revolution in Zurich—“Dadaism”.

When I was in Paris in Musée de I’Orangerie, I saw a collection of Dadaist paintings and art works, as well as some treasured Dadaistic video performances.

It also tells the origin of Dadaism, which is originated in Zurich.

It’s different with other art movements, the name of “Dada” is given by the artists themselves, not like usually what the later scholars gave them. How the name “Dada” was founded is not absolutely clear. One story is that when the group of the founders held a meeting, they stuck a paper knife into a French – German dictionary and the word they pointed was “dada”, a French word for “hobbyhorse”. However if it’s true or not, where word was chosen just randomly, same as there style of art.

As an art revolution, it represents disorder, anti-war and anti-art. Dadaism is a movement of nihilism, an anarchic art movement. A group of trendy people pursue human freedom and overturn tradition.

In 1916, when war swept across Europe, many exiled artists and thinkers came to neutral Switzerland. A street in Zurich, called Spiegelgasse, was inhabited by people who wanted to change the world. It all started at 1 Spiegel street in Niederdorf, Zurich. Today, there the Cabaret Voltaire still exists at the same place and still Dada art is exhibited and also performances are being held. At daytime, the place is popular for tourists to visit. At night it’s also a popular place for locals to go out and have a drink and chat with friends. The atmosphere is very cozy and it guarantees a nice and memorable evening!

Sort:

haha I read too quickly that paragraph saying:

they stuck a paper knife into a French

Ouch! And then, I read again and understood ^^

I didn't know Dadaism was originally from Zurich. It's much more known for banks than for art, that's for sure ^^ I like those religious drawings hijacked with rude Spanish sentences and expressions, it looks like modern memes!

Nice photography @liflorence.... Thanks for sharing your experience with us
