What Could Free Education For Everyone Mean?
They say knowledge is power and I believe it is a power that is meant to be shared. When we hoard that knowledge, keeping power to ourselves, we’re do a great disservice to the future of mankind.
I've always felt that education should be free and it was wonderful to hear that echoed when I was volunteering on an organic farm. A couple came for a tour around the farm and the wife was going to pay for it as a birthday gift for her husband. The farmer, refused payment saying that education should not have to be paid for and that if a business was sound it should be an example of success in itself, without him having to make money from teaching how it's done. He said they were welcome to purchase some of the produce from the farm if they wished.
By educating ALL people we give everyone a chance to become productive and choose their path in life. I've heard it said that if everyone were educated then there would be no-one to do the ‘menial’ jobs, but in all honesty, anyone who takes responsibility for themselves would see that all jobs are part and parcel of day to day life.
Education is more than just traditional academics. A base of literacy and mathematics is important, but from there a hands on education is just as valid as a highly academic one. I would like to see a move away from an attitude that certain jobs are superior to others, when they are, in fact, all necessary. Some people are happier with physically productive work, whereas others prefer office work.
Some may say that most western countries already provide free education, but let's be honest, it's pretty much a one size fits all proposition and doesn't suit everyone. I feel that everyone should have the option to be educated in a way that suits them. It should be a choice, not forced, and it shouldn't stop being free after a certain point if someone wishes to continue that education, ie, university level. If someone without money is just as capable, or more so, of doing advanced degrees and PhDs as someone with money, then they should have that same opportunity. Money does not necessarily mean capability any more than lack of it means they have no capability.
Education allows us to better see cause and affect, giving us the chance to make better decisions for ourselves and our environments. The right education allows us to think and deduce things for ourselves; it can open our minds to all sorts of cultures and ways of life.
