Homesteading - Changes in Season

So the weather here has finally made the change into summer. The nice days of the highs being in the 70's have turned into 100 degree real feel during the day and muggy 80's at night. We are going to miss those cooler days and nights since getting things done now during the day will mean mostly low 100's. This is when we try to change gears and work over night outside to clear the property and especially do burn piles when getting rid of brush. Running a burn pit during the day when the real feel is over 110 can be pretty miserable.

I even try to smoke meat overnight when it is cooler. We put an led flood light in the greenhouse that I have 120 volt power ran to. The light coming from the greenhouse lights a huge area at night and then we use led area lights that run on 18v batteries.

This is the time we get the nanny goats and new babies out into padlocks with the cows and out of the pens and get the hogs into the pens so we can divide them up for breeding in a few weeks and it keeps them close to the sprinklers and cooler mud holes we create for them. The summer season comes with lots of changes like running sprinklers for the hogs and the tops of the rabbit cages to keep the tin cool. We also add frozen water bottles and jugs to the rabbit cages and also inside the worm bins to help manage the temps. We even run mister fans around the rabbit cages and dog kennels to help keep everyone cool in the hot season here. We go from closing the greenhouse early to build heat before sundown to leaving it open with fans running over night.

For the worm farms in the shipping container we run a evapcooler fan that we fill up with ice along with several other fans and a dehumidifier to drop temp and humidity. This with adding wet sheets over the bins and fans to aerate keeps everything at a pretty normal temp range. If that does not work we add ice jugs when needed.

Winter changes to summer it seems in just a few weeks here and then again summer will change back into winter just as fast only leaving around two months a year of nice cool days and warm nights. What changes do you have to make from season to season?

It's a lot of hot hard work but worth those few moments at sunset every night!
