Defoliating the tomato plants... :(steemCreated with Sketch.

in #life9 years ago

Sadly, the white spots on the tomato plants' leaves are spreading. So, I took a blade to them, removing all the branches that had leaves with white spots on them. Hopefully that will help to stop the infection from spreading. It also gives more light to the interior; most of the plants had leaves dying in there (which is normal, but, need to remove the fungus!). So I removed the dead leaves as well, but left ones that looked like they might recover with more sunlight.

Will check tomorrow and see if the white spots continue to spread.

Appreciate any guidance, here!

These three images are the piles of leaves after I removed them. The first and second I bagged, then checked the plants again and found some more, so made a third pile where the first had been, and bagged it as well -- spores don't get a ride in our composter!

You should burn those leaves as a warning to the fungus... ha ha! But seriously aphids will spread the fungus plant to plant.

Interesting about aphids. We had a rash of them last year at the old place, after I brought the tomato plants indoors to see if I could extend their production (really, I didn't much at all). That house had ladybugs in the room I kept them in and the attic stairs going up above one of the closets, but, they didn't participate. :(

Perhaps @lizziesworld could advise you....

Thanks! I have followed her. Appreciate the pointer. :)

only a pleasure :)

Sorry about this.

If it's not powdery mildew, it could be Leaf Mold or Septoria Leaf Spot.

Regardless, removing the affected portions is recommended. Increased air flow should help, too.

Good luck!

Thanks for the article! Seems there's so much to know about tilling the soil. :)

You're welcome! I hope it helps. There's a never-ending learning curve, I'm discovering. Lol! That's okay, tho, as it keeps things interesting.

Hey saving the earth one composting at a time!

I hate to prune like that but it is necessary. I have eggplants coming in with something similar. It almost looks like something was sprayed on them. Gardening isn't for the weak!

That's for sure! I've managed to tone my muscles without even trying! :)

Sorry about your eggplants. We lost an acorn squash plant a while back (a month ago?), and I just took all the cucumbers off the plants, to see if it'd help them give energy to fight the infection. Seems a losing battle. Living and learning! :)

i wish i could answer about it :( i hope steemians help you out : )
