Adventures in Florida #10: Exploring Downtown Jacksonville

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

There's an amazing public art initiative downtown here!

On a recent trip to Jacksonville for work I had a bit of time to kill after and between gigs so I ventured into the downtown area to do some exploring. After a fresh rain while eating lunch I grabbed my camera and hit the streets. Little did I know that there is a city-wide public art initiative here and you can find tons of murals, sculptures, mosaics and more throughout the area.

These two murals were the first to catch my eye as I began to walk around. Another 1/2 block of walking and I found this small gem.

It was hidden on the side of a small store, thankfully I turned around and saw it before I crossed the street to check out the central plaza downtown.

Along some of the planter walls in the plaza there was another public art piece, this was the first mosaic I found.

Apparently this plaza used to be a hot spot for political rallies and speeches back in the day. Many Presidents have held their events here in the past. At the far end of this plaza I found what was probably my favorite sculpture scattered around the city.
say ahh!

Not only is there some spectacular art all over the city, the architecture on many of the buildings was pretty striking. There are quite a few buildings over 100 years old still standing and functioning. There are also a bunch of really beautiful old churches scattered about!

After about an hour of walking around I had to high-tail it to my next gig but I ventured back downtown that night to capture a few shots from the St. John's River and Marina Park!

I continued down the Riverwalk and under that bridge pictured above I found what was probably my favorite piece of art around the city.

What a beautiful piece of art sitting under a bridge, I'm not sure I would've appreciated it as much had I seen it in the daylight. The blue lights at night really made it pop!
Thanks for joining me on this adventure, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did...until next time!
