Asian too here, and it's true that we don't tend to speak up, but I don't think it's a good thing. Yeah, some people of other ethnicity can take it too far and complain when there was no need for it, but when Asians especially of Chinese origin were discriminated in the late 1800s, that was a time to speak up. Still, I do see racism from eurocentrists regularly from one of the nefarious places on the internet which I'm addicted to, and I did experience racism from black people in my own country, and the reason we don't speak up is the reason why we get bullied plenty of times. Words matter as much as actions in my opinion. I'm not the kind to just take it and say nothing.
Too much attention is given to those who cry out loud. I think the culture is greatly responsible. Entitlement mentality is a cancer. But keeping your voice and head down is also one. I'd still put 80% of the blame on those crybabies and those who pay too much attention.
One good thing that I'm seeing is that many Asian countries are catching up while west is lagging behind or even falling down. It's a net loss for human progress. But at least I feel more optimistic about being in Asia than west.
Either way it's hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
The only entitlements that I'm willing to accept without any resistance are NAP, Equality before law and Non-discriminating opportunity. The other ones are not basic rights. You can have them as secondary rights, but they are never primary rights.
what do you think of ethnic representation in media?
Absolutely irrelavant. On reason I massively respect Japan is because they (or at least anime) get it. They don't care about representation. The two best fighters of Sword of The Stranger (almost a masterpiece BTW) are a blonde and a redhead eve though it's set in feudal Japan.
Black Lagoon has 3 Asian characters (+ The Russian Mafia) that I can name on top of my head. Fate/Stay Night had only one Japanese historical hero. Motoko from GitS intentionally pick a "western" look. Psycho-Pass has most of its quotes from western literature.
But all of these things are there as a side-effect of telling a certain kind of story. The representation was never the point. The representation also ends up making a lot of sense.
This extends to games like Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Nobody owns the memes and culture. The Japanese society/culture assimilates everything while keeping their identity.
The above may even look like unrelated to the question you asked. But that's my answer. It's the Zen way. The media representation absolutely doesn't matter at all and Japanese animators/directors might even be capable of making art about western history better than the citizens of those countries.
Just think about Monster. I can't think of any fiction set in Germany that can even compete with the quality of Monster. It captures everything well and there is zero attempt at representation that doesn't seem natural.
I removed my question because I thought you were too busy to answer, and felt like I didn't want to continue talking about it either. Considering the entitlements, well, Japan has a strong social safety net. I believe they're needed if you want a healthy society. Looking at medical bills in the US and it's kind of crazy, where hospitals would charge them like 100 000 us dollars for a procedure. So I don't consider it in the realms of right, but rather as a necessity.
Anyway, as for representation, of course it doesn't matter in Japan, because most are Japanese, but how many times do Asian people get called Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee or are totally not even considered by other races as dating material. I'm talking mostly about Hollywood by the way. Rather than say you have to represent me!!!, I say, if you're going to do representation, do it well, otherwise don't even bother.
So I don't quite agree with the notion that representation doesn't matter. It may matter just a little, but it still matters. For all we know, we could have movies with only aliens in them, and no one would watch them because there would be no humans. Some people of course can just ignore any kind of rep, but others don't, and it's when they don't is when this has an effect on society as a whole.
Sure, media representation is like one of the world's least of worries, but I wouldn't totally discard it.
Anyway I'm just kind of tired now, so I'll have to leave you with that half baked answer. Ciao.
Rather than say you have to represent me!!!, I say, if you're going to do representation, do it well, otherwise don't even bother.
This is exactly what I want and ironically and paradoxically, one way you are guaranteed to screw up is by pushing for diversity. It's like catching a butterfly.
One reason Japan has been so capable of adopting foreign work and create foreign looking work is exactly because they don't really care. I doubt the french would ever make anything as good as Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
It's like those economic policies that are brought to help the poor. Most of the time they end up hurting the most. For an example most of the rapidly developed countries of the last 50 years don't have minimum wages, high taxes (some have 0% income tax) and relatively little regulation.
Personally I just want the stupid theater owners of West to play Japanse, Korean and Hong-Kong movies so that those movies can make more money and therefor have bigger budgets in the future.
I mean just imagine Shin Godzilla with half of Hollywood budget.
I don't live in a rapidly developed country so minimum wage is kind of important just for most people to get by (about 220 us dollars per month). I don't see how they hurt, at least in my case when the companies hiring are well capable of paying. Also you underestimate French cinema.
