Teaching is something am very passionate about,I think I have the gift of imparting people with knowledge. Personally I teach graphic as hobby and with my leisure but teaching school kids is what I major on.Teaching to me is not just a job but a hobby.I just feel fulfilled anytime I am privilege to teach people what am good at.
I started teaching 8 years ago,although I started out first seeing it as something I could do just to keep body and soul together and to at least have something to meet my ever increasing need...human want and need they say is insatiable. I never loved it at first,I only saw it as a means to an end and not to sit idle doing nothing as I was afraid of that saying which goes thus "an idle hands is the devil's workshop" smiles..I know we understand what this means.
What suprised me was how I eventually fell in love with this job as time passed,it dawned on me that am needed in the teaching line and that I have a it takes to teach because the trait started finding expression as I continued. The consistent result I was getting confirmed to me that it is what I should really dedicate my time to do as parents were reaching out with kind and encouraging remarks couples with present just to show how grateful they are for the change they see in their wards. The remark I was getting motivated me more than anything,it is the height of fulfillment for me,the incentive I get from teaching is just an icing on the cake.
Teaching also opened me up to an unusual love for kids which made me looked beyond just their academics performance to their their moral wellbeing so much so that I even joined a move that aims at indoctrinating young lads with the right moral values and also support them with reasonable donation..this we did from our personal pocket just because we want to see kid get it right even as they grow to become adults.
Teaching is really an unusual job,not everyone one can do it,there are characters a teacher must have before one can be considered to be a teacher. Let me quickly highlight few of them.
- Patience.
Patience they say is a virtue,a teacher is someone that has this virtue to very appreciable measure and this is because it take patience to teach,there are times your student seems not to be getting what you're teaching him or her no matter how hard you try to explain it,it is patience that will help you remain with that student and not give up on him or her. It is patience that will help you believe in that student.
- Good listeners.
Teachers are good listener,we always give ears to the verbal and non verbal expressions our students. We do not only talk,we give rooms for quality feedback which in a way help us to know how we can best help our student.
- Empathy.
We teachers posses this ability to a very appreciable extent,we tend to put ourselves in the shoes of our student in order to feel what they feel and also relate with them in such a way that we not only teach school related topics but also look deep into what could stand as a barrier to effective learning such as domestic violence,abuse and the likes.
Our Challenges
This writeup will be incomplete if I refuse to highlight some of our major challenges which many will want to exclude just to feel good about their profession,perhaps someone might just come across this writeup and do something about it.
Every job has it own challenge but I believe that of a teacher is quite unique and unusual. We are faced with a lot and I will like to mention a few.
- Reward System.
Teaching is one of the noble profession or job you can talk of today,everyone was one at a point in his or her life taught by someone,but you will agree with me that teachers are not being rewarded well compared to other profession,it baffles me sometime how they are being treated. I guess it because the society feels the service rendered is not noble enough.
- Teacher are not Highly regarded.
Well this is a bitter truth I feel the society should really look into, other profession are given much regard compared to teachers who play major roles in the life of those the society seems to hold in high esteem.In my own opinion,the foundation should be esteem more than the edifice you see and appreciate because without the foundation,there be no edifice
- Teachers are being owed.
A sad truth. Teacher work their fingers even to their bones but will still be denied what is due to them as at when due.This is common in the African continent (apologies to the black). And when probed into,the excuse you get are just not tenable and I think this has also contributed to the mean life most teacher leave when compared to other professions.
Conclusion
In spite of all I've listed,I personally still have a burning love for this profession,it's the passion and the love I have for it that drives me and makes me forge ahead on this noble path I've chosen path.
