In the Philippines, fireworks show is more highly-anticipated, than any other, in the celebration of New Year. After eating midnight meal or known as the Media Noche, the members of the family gather outside and begin the tradition of lighting up fireworks or just watch the explosion of colors above the sky. Others make a lot of noise to scare away bad spirits. But for this year, there is an unforeseen change in practice when the President banned the use and production of firecrackers. It has really affected most of the Filipinos especially the vendors who are generating income from selling it. For some, this is a good way to avoid the dangerous effects it brings- minimizing the risk of injuries and wounded ones who don’t use it properly.

Private Organizations have been passing this to the government to regulate the use of firecrackers because of the harmful effects not just to the health of everyone but to the environment, as well.

Filipino Traditions

New Year’s Day is one of the most awaited holidays of the Filipinos. It is next to celebrating Christmas where all the members of the family are again having fun and spending time together. Some might be wealthy enough to prepare another feast and some are just enjoying following some superstitious beliefs.

One of which is making noises from cars and motorcycles, others blow horns and whistles to drive away negativity and let it not enter the incoming year. On the other hand, to attract fortune into the house, Filipinos open their doors, windows and cabinets.

My girl friends sent me their pics wearing their dress with polka dots.

Filipinos also believe in wearing clothes with polka-dots and spreading coins on the floor because for them, circles and round shapes are signs of prosperity and never ending blessings for the whole year ahead.

Children and other adults who are not gifted with height believe that jumping as high as they could, as the clock strikes 12, will make them taller.

Philippines is rich for having tropical fruits that are round in shape like apple, grapes, orange, pineapple and etc. Part of the belief is to prepare 12 of these rounded fruits that signify abundance and more blessings for every month of the year.

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to live life to the fullest.

January 1, 2018

My celebration wasn’t as lavish as others celebrated it but I am more than grateful to have welcomed the New Year with my family in the evening and friends at dawn. I was supposed to celebrate it with our relatives but I chose to stay at home while my parents and brother went to a beach resort with them.

I was alone for good 5 hours until my friends decided to pick me up at home. I wasn’t expecting for the spontaneous happening that time. I have celebrated the rest of the night strolling around the city, watching the city lights from C3 Road and having good conversations with them. It could have been a nicer view if the fireworks were not banned. Nevertheless, I still had a good time spending my first day of 2018 with my friends on the streets.

2017 has been an incredible year, to creating best moments with the right people. I am more than happy about the experiences that this year has also given me. It is all about hard work being paid off. I graduated and made my parents proud of my achievements. More than all the victories and failures, this year made me realize one thing- to keep moving forward and continuously reaching my goals.
