Dissolution (graphic)

in #art7 years ago (edited)

This is a simplified drawing I did of one of my earlier paintings, "Dissolution". I recently watched a TED video presentation, "Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality" by Anil Seth. He works for a research department that studies the nature of consciousness.

Their research shows that our consciousness is based upon two things, inner and outer perception. There is the bio-feedback of our bodies that informs our state of well being which then also influences our emotional and thought patterns. Our senses provide feedback from the outer world. But the perception of the outer world is largely built upon prior experiences which then establish patterns of preconception. Reality, is then but communally agreed upon pattern of preconception. In his video, he demonstrates very simply and quickly how our sense of understanding, perception is built upon prior experience.

He then goes on to discuss how the fabric of our consciousness can be very easily disturbed and fall apart. Our very sense of self is not this solid thing we perceive it to be. It is very mutable and transient.

This is largely the concept behind this artwork, that consciousness is made up of sum parts, that when "momentarily" dissolved, or disassociated and then brought back together again, it can either produce a more orderly and coherent state of mind, or a chaotic labyrinth.
