The band gained fame throughout the 1990s with its retro aesthetics, lyrics peppered with jokes, references to popular culture and the partying attitude of both members, who were part of the vanguard of the new Latin American rock, that which would make its way into the U.S. market.

The duo was named after a mix between Russian spy Illya Kuryakin, a TV character from the 1960s show The CIPOL Agent, and Colombian soccer player Carlos Valderrama.
