Funny message of SETI@home admin /re: Berkeley
I think that one is very funny (if he had just spell checked...) and thought I share it with those who do not do BOINC or the project.
SETI@home: Free Speech and SETI@home
Once again I need to explain our policies on free speech, as I've been getting lots of nastygrams both here and on twitter and facebook.
First, let me explain our relationship to the UC Berkeley administration. Despite the fact that I met with the Chancellor once for about 15 seconds, the UC administration neither knows nor cares that SETI@home exists. Threats of quitting SETI@home or withholding donations will be about as effective as kicking a stray dog because you don't like something the dog catcher did. They won't notice. They don't care. They get no direct benefit from SETI@home, so here will be no effect on them, or the on University. We could shut off our servers tomorrow, and nobody in Sproul Hall would notice a thing.
So here are our project commandments on free speech.
Thine speech is free as in freedom, not free as in beer.
Thou mayst speak thine mind.
Thou shalt do so in the appropriate forum.
Thou shalt recognize that speech has consequences to thine self and to others, some legal, some financial, some painful.
Thou shalt not force others to pay for the delivery of or the consequences of speech they may not agree with.
On public SETI@home forums, thou shalt use language a parent would not mind their 12 year old hearing.
Failure to obey the forum rules will result in moderator action. If thou dost not understand, see thou commandment 4.
In other words, if you want to be heard on the current controversy, try the Politics forum. Then use twitter, facebook, instagram and whatever social media you want. SETI@home in general and me in particular have no power to effect change of any sort.
It sounds like there's still going to be a riot in Berkeley tomorrow because a group of white supremacists and a group of left wing anarchists are ignoring commandments 2, 3, and 4. The people of Berkeley and the people of California will be picking up the tab for their "freedom of speech" whether they want to or not. And personally, I think that's what's been missing from the whole discussion.
No wonder you're getting 'nasty' comments if you're suggesting that the people opposing the anti-capitalists are all automatically 'white supremacists', fuck off. There's video evidence for fuck's sake that it's mainly the anti-capitalists that are being aggressive, white supremacists have nothing to do with these brawls you might find perhaps two within that entire crowd.
As you quote, he said white supremacists and a group of left wing anarchists - that is about the same number on the extremist scale I suppose, so I would say that is neutral.
I don't know what is happening at Berkeley, but I know that for a fight you always need 2 sides and I know you can always find someone willing to get nasty on either side, sometimes the same people deciding which side based on the calendar if it is a even day or uneven.
Anyway this post was quite deliberately as I read it not aimed at a certain group - see my first point. He likely got nastygrams from both sides.
So why not take this message as what it was meant? As a "DON'T INVOLVE ME IN YOUR STUPID FIGHT" hint?
By claiming this about people you've already chosen a side by trying to falsely smear one, they're not white nationalists in the slightest, some of them are even liberals who are absolutely fed up of antifa and feminists trying to shut people down.
Don't be so stupid and have the decency not to misrepresent and slander, this is why people are getting pissed off with you.

The point of the Admin's message is that threatening him does not help anyone, so please stop it.
If you don't like his wording, then write him another nastygram, will surely help. But don't pester me.
Can we leave it at that and not try to kick people by interpreting what their interpretation is based on an assortment of nasty messages that could be true or be false flag?
Getting fired up because of such insignificances may well be the reason why there is a fight.
It's not insignificant, people get either beaten up, ostracised from society or even killed because of others spreading lies about people, especially public figures. The fact that you're showing such inconsideration towards the people on the receiving end of these lies and slander shows to me exactly why people are getting pissy with you and the people involved in this random mess that I just encountered in the first place.
U.C Berkeley has a shit reputation for free speech and ideas in general but it's about to get even worse now especially if antifa attacks happen again while there are hundreds of police out in force and the university will quite rightly end up losing a lot of money because of the bad publicity.
You should fucking care because you are perpetuating the problem by going along with and repeating the original poster's bullshit. You go ahead though and keep on wondering why people are getting pissy with you for repeating their lies.

What's this about? What's the drama that is ongoing? Is it a SETI thing or a Berkeley think that is leaking onto SETI?
