Garden projects. Large fruit cage. (Kitchen garden)
Another project we had to undertake was this large fruit cage. We had pretty much free rein on the design, and work methods. In principle we decided on a oak framed structure, with steal mesh as the main barrier for the wildlife. We started by concreting 200mm oak posts which were 2.6m high, 6 in total, to create 2 equal squares.
Once these had set we bolted the horizontal peace’s near the top. This left us a 2.4m gap for the fitting of the mesh panels. The next step was to fit the steal diagonal peace’s luckily for myself, my farther is a welder / fabricator, and he made all of the steal work for this project, at very little notice.
Once this was up it was just a case of fitting the gate, and mesh to the main areas. The tricky part of the build was the roof. 4 tubular steels that were rolled to a curve sat into the r top of the main posts, and met in the middle where thy inserted into a large oak finial. It was incredibly tricky to get right, and it took 4 people to hold everything in place whilst it was fitted. So unfortunately I was a bit to busy to take pictures of this stage.
Of this roof structure hung a fine netting which was added after we had finished by the company that made them to size. Overall it was good project, and still stands in almost new condition today.

It probably just seems like a job to you but I would imagine that after all the planning and hard wirknitsbprettyy good to sit back and look at how it came together with some satisfaction right? I showed my wife this one as she's a pretty keen gardener. She's pretty jealous of that garden. 😁
Donyoubdo the design work or do you work with a designer and then implement their plans?
It can seem like just a job time to time. It is nice to revisit some of our work once it has matured. We do work with a lot of designers. We did quite a bit of work for designers. They usually recommend us to the client, and some times we’re employed direct by them. We also do our own designs, but they are usually low budget builds to be honest. I don’t know if you guys have heard of Diarmuid Gavin, but we did quite a bit of work for a TV morning show for him. If you google my name, one of the top hits is a mention in his book, which was nice. I enjoyed working with him, as his designs always push the boundary of what’s possible, even in small housing estate gardens.
Oh that's pretty cool he gave you a mention. Sort of repays the hard work you put in differently than the monetary reward. I'll Google it.
Yeah, I can imagine it seems just like a job at times but also good that younger to revisit the work and see it more mature and developing.

That is a classy looking fruit cage.
What gauge mesh did you use on it?
It was 1” x 1” and I think it was 9 gauge. All steel was powder coated in gloss grey, but a company I deal with through a motorsport I take part in.
